My twins were up very early this morning. If they both wake up together its very hard to deal with, as they are now 11 months old, stand in their cots, and I basically have to work with them at a one to one basis to get them back to sleep. So we ended up in the playpen (they have a very big twin playpen). I took one to change his nappy, and then was going to take the other when I noticed a teddy had blood on his leg. It was dry and not a lot of it but I was of course alarmed. I turned to this twin and I saw he had dry blood on his dummy and face. I picked him up and woke up DH and we both examined him. At first I thought it was a tooth, but then DH looked and saw there was some dry blood in his nose. There was none on his pyjama, or cot, I think the bleed was quite minimal, and was more smeared and dry round his mouth and nose, though not sure why it would have been on teddy's leg. Anyway, he ate his breakfast, never cried in the whole time. He does often bang his head, he's always been quite clumsy and he is also very impulsive and is generally forward, or at least at lot more forward that his brother. He is constantly cruising round the pen, its made out of plastic and doesn't really cause much more than a red mark that goes away when he falls. It also has A LOT of padding on the floor, I have 5 different layers. But anyway, I don't think he fell, he didn't have time as I wasn't long changing the nappy, and he must have been biting the teddy in that time. Before his twin woke up again I did have him in the bed with me trying to get him to sleep. I don't co sleep but I sometimes have them in the bed for me for an hour or so if they won't sleep another way (one at a time). I am taking him to his doctor this afternoon just in case. Any ideas or experience?

Has it been a while since his fingernails were clipped? Maybe he scratched himself in his nose which caused the bleed?

I hadn't thought of that one, their nails grow like grass and I'm constantly clipping them. I did look at his fingers and didn't notice any blood, he is napping now so I will examine him more closely, quite a few hours ago X

I had a similar panic one morning when getting my son out of his crib. There was a small bloodstain that soaked through the sheet. We inspected him and ended up finding the tiniest bit of residue in his nose. It's never happened again, so in our case it was just a fluke, I think. It was the middle of last summer, so maybe the a/c made the air too dry.

Was the doctor helpful?

You know in the end we didn't take him, it seemed so silly and we said we would do it if it happened again. The blood was so minimal and he was fine so it seemed a waste of time. I think dry air was the cause too. But if it happens again however minimal I would take him like a shot. X

I suffered from nose bleeds as a child and my DD has them. She had her first one at about 12 months old and has had them regularly since really. Sometimes they start from nothing, and others there is an ominous red finger where she's been picking ha! I've gone into her at times and she's been covered in blood. I'm used to it now when it happens but it can be scary I know. But its really common and pretty harmless. If a nosebleed doesn't stop or they have lots in a short period then maybe get checked, but otherwise its pretty harmless x

We had a random nose bleed when DS2 was a baby (at least that's what we think it was as he woke up with blood on the crib sheet). I think we just called the pediatrician, and I do remember being told it was normal...
