My dh went for a semen analysis last week and the doctors phoned yesterday to say that there wasnt enough to do the test, what the hell is that supposed to mean? Sorry for the rant but it just feels like everything is against us. I have my HSG this monday.
Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks ladies

Hiya. My husband did 4 SA and there was only enough semen in one to test. Unfortunately, it wasn't good news; turns out he has azoospermia (no sperm) and a cyst that Is causing a blockage. This was diagnosed with an MRI scan so might be worth asking about.

Sorry not to be more positive. It doesn't mean I think your husband will be the same, mine also has a problem with sperm production, not necessarily caused by the cyst.

So sorry to hear that. I havent heard of that before, what options does that leave you with?
We have booked another test for january, its difficult because we both need to take a day off work to do it so i can drive him to the hospital.

How long did he abstain for? I'm finding better results if mine abstains for 3 or 4 days. Our worst sample was after we BD'd twice in one day then abstained for 2 days after.

For about 3 days, but we just back from honeymoon so maybe he needed to build up a bit more, lol! We'll leave it longer next time. Was just hoping to have some answers before christmas :( set back after set back.

I have read that some guys don't do well with the stress of having to "produce a sample" on demand, and end up shooting almost nothing. Many guys do better if they do it at home wherever they are used to doing it, some guys bring their partner with them to the clinic to help them relax, and some guys are only able to get a normal sample by collecting it in a non-spermicidal condom during sex (I think these are provided by the doctor because not just any condom will do). Also, guys produce varying amounts of semen depending on mow aroused they are, which is why some guys just can't get enough of a sample while at the doctor's office. Making sure DH gets good and worked up may prove to have better results.

Have you asked your DH if he produced less than usual? If he says that it wasn't at all the normal amount, you might want to check with the clinic to see if collecting a sample at home, either manually or during sex, is an option.

PS: I am so glad I'm not a guy. I don't think I'd be able to have an orgasm at a doctor's office with all the staff knowing exactly what I'm doing in that little room. It seems like it must be the most embarrassing thing in the world. Just thinking about having to do that makes me a little queasy. I don't find it surprising that so many guys have trouble with it/refuse to do it.

My dh always had decent semen analyses, but we wanted better. He went on a supplement called alphalimphoic acid (sp) and all area doubled!! I kid you not-
Count- was 53 mill/35 mill- NOW 64million
Motility- was 37%/40%- NOW 65% progressive!!!!
Morphology- was 7%/5%- NOW 9%
