Our mortgage is v high so its going to be very difficult to get by after SMP stops next Jan, can OH get working tax credits (I always thought WTC are something you get if you pay for childcare only?) and do you think we could get any benefits?

I tried the benefits calculator to work it out but didnt understand it, is it worth giving the helpline a call?

it is always worth giving them a call..

although i'm not sure if you will get very much to be honest.

my hubby earns similar to yours and i was considering not going back to work and the only thing that i might have got was the child tax credit element but it wasn't working out very much. :(

make sure they know that you aren't going back to work as they usually work off what you earned in the previous tax year and so might not give you a realistic figure.

this is from directgov.uk website...... https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/TaxCredits/Gettingstarted/whoqualifies/DG_073802

What are the income limits for getting tax credits?

The total annual income limits that generally apply before your tax credits are reduced or stopped altogether are as follows:
•if you have children it is £41,300
•if you're single without children it is £12,900
•if you’re in a couple without children it is £17,700

It's important to know that:
•these income limits don't apply to everyone - for example if you have a large family and pay a lot in childcare, or have a disability, the income limit could be higher
•you need to make a claim to get a definite answer to how much you are entitled to

You can get a better idea of how much income you can have before your tax credits are reduced or stopped by using:
•'at a glance' entitlement tables for tax credits - follow the link below that applies to your situation
•a quick online questionnaire - this will tell if you're likely to qualify for tax credits based on different income limits, but it won't tell you how much you can get

It's worth knowing that the entitlement tables are only a rough guide to how much tax credits you could get for the current tax year - 6 April 2011 to 5 April 2012. They will be updated with the amounts for the next tax year on 6 April 2012.

The gross earning limit is going to go down next tax year to below 40K

It looks as if you OH earns over £41,300 you will not get anything other than Child Benefit and that's going to go in 2013 for higher rate tax payers! (ie if your family earns over £44,000 :nope: sorry to say)

My OH earns 38k and we don't get anything besides child benefit.

You will not get wtc, you need to earn £17,000 or less to be entitled. With what your oh earns, you may be entitled to a small amount of ctc.

I would give them a call and give them your figures and see what they say.

You won't get anything. You will get basic tax credits (£40 per month) until the limit is reduced April 2012. You will also get basic Child Benefit at £80 per month.

My OH only earns 22k and we don't get anything other than that even if I don't go back to work x

We only get CB and obviously will be losing that next year. I would say you probably won't be entitled to anything.

Yep, my hubby earns approx the same as yours and we get nothing, and from April next year we wont get child benefit either.

You will get child benefit of around £20 per week up til next year, but then that will stop.

I think if you are under around £45,000 you may be able to claim.....that was the last time I spoke to them on the phone a few months ago.:flower:

I think you will be able to claim CTC.We have a combined income of 44k and we receive £40 per month

I thought that if 1 parent earnt over 40k it wasnt given but combined is was..., or am I just thinking of the child benefit now?

Youve just made my day. My OH earns 30ish and i earn 21 at the moment but that is due to change soon. When i have a LO i would like to go back to work 3 days a week giving me roughly a 12K wage.... i didnt think we would qualify for anything. Thanks so much. Every little helps with childcare costs so high!:happydance:

Though im guessing things will have changed by the time i ttc and then get the bfp and then give birth.... knowing my luck the cap will be 35K

Good! You are the same as us really-my OH earns 33k and i earn 12k (but this years CTC is based on last years earnings which were a bit less). I think things will change-i think from next April only those earning under 43k will get anything, so we shoudl both squeeze in!

Hi my hubby is currently not working & my mat pay finishes april  but i was hoping to have the yr off but wont know what we gna get til april. can anyone help me as really dont want to go back lol x

yep agree with what others are saying you might scrape cb at £80 per month, but unfortunately no tax credits, they are reducing the thresholds significantly this april, no tax credits if household income is over £27k with one child or over £32k with 2 children. unless the are high childcare costs involved, but obv if your not working this won't apply. There are exceptions ie disability etc but the above limits are based on standard claim, its such a shame they are cutting thresholds so much even the 40 quid a month helps !

I went on mat leave aug last yr & hubby hasnt earnt tht much as had 7wks off sick then only worked 5 days in dec :-( but as have to give my employer 8wks noticwe to return i need to know know lol.
