Nothing On Ultrasound, But hCG is High??

Today I went for an ultrasound (I'm only 4w3d by ovulation, 5w3d by LMP - there was a mix-up with scheduling and the ultrasound people wouldn't listen when I said it was too early...now I get to be royally freaked out thanks to them) and they didn't see anything (transvag). So, they did a 17dpo beta.

10dpo Beta: 83.7
12dpo Beta: 311.7, Progesterone: 177
17dpo Beta: 3659 (!!)

I am familiar with the literature says at a beta of 1500 you should see a gestational sac. This is how we r/o Ectopic in the Emergency Dept. (i.e. if Beta > 1500 and no sac = Ectopic, of course always with doubling parameters and clinical symptom correlation).

Betabase is down, of course, so I'm just looking for anyone who has had really high numbers and nothing on an early scan. I just want to hear others experiences or speculations.

They don't think it's ectopic, since my #s are clearly doubling well. I'm just worried bc they are SO high, but nothing was seen on U/S...

Maybe multiples and you won't see it until the individual sacks are big enough?

That's the only thing I could come up with, too.

But you agree that the numbers are reassuring that there is SOMETHING there and it's not ectopic, yes? I mean...normally with ectopics you don't have great hCGs doubling appropriately and getting that high, right?

Sorry. :dohh: I'm paranoid.

I know all this stuff, I just need reassurance.

 <---- Portrait of myself.

I'm not sure, but if the number was high enough they should be able to see it in the tube or where it implanted.

That is how I was with our daughter...I went back the next week or the following (I can not remember) and there was the yolk sac. Are they going to rescan you at all?

It was simply too early to scan. The hcg level can be influenced by your corpus luteum. I am guessing if you go in again next week you will see the gestational sac for an early five weeks.

I hope this helps, I had a scan at 5+3 with my daughter my hcg was over 5000 and they thought it was molar or ectopic. Nothing to see at that scan. Had another after two VERY LONG weeks of waiting and now I have a beautiful healthy baby girl. :hugs: it turns out well for you.

Sometimes I think our babies just end up making lots of hormones or something, even before they are noticeable on the scan. When I was in my first tri I was bleeding, so they decided to do an u/s and bloods for me at around 5 weeks - all they saw was a black spot with a bubble in it (I guess that was the sack?) but by then my levels were nearly 18 000 (and they were saying that by this amount you should see a heartbeat and a pole or something like that and they didn't see anything like that) so I was also really freaked out, but numbers just kept doubling and my Dr. said no worries, and then by 12 weeks I got a real scan and got to see my baby girl dancing around - no moles, no ectopic. Sending you lots of positive vibes and hopefully soon you'll get to have a piece of mind and seeing your baby on the screen :flower:

I didn't have my first scan until 5w+3d and there was just an sac. I wouldn't stress too much, a lot of women don't get their first scan until much later :)

My mums friend has a funny shaped womb or something, she couldnt see her baby for ages but had a healthy boy, now she on baby #2 and same again.they just watching her hcg numbers for a while until they can see baby.
