NSAIDs and Infertility

I've just found out that the NSAID's I've been on for arthritis since before we started TTC, might be responsible for my "unexplained" infertility. I'm angry that neither my GP, FS or rheumatologist thought there might be a link, especially when I ask before taking anything, if it's safe to take while TTC.

I'm going to get an appointment with my GP asap but in the meantime I'm not taking diclofenac especially since ovulation is just round the corner.

I just wanted to pass this information on, in case it helps anyone else in here. I have some links to medical journals that I'll post here. I'm going to print them off and take them with me to see my GP.

I also just starting reading about this. I frequently use(d) Advil due to migraines and have now switched to Tylenol. Not saying this is the sole reason for not getting pregnant but it is one other aspect to consider.

This is all fairly new research and until a substantial amount of information is out there most physicians won't mention it, unfortunately.

The second link I've put up was published in 1996, so you'd think it'd be more widely known. I take NSAID's every day so I imagine that that would have a greater effect than occasional use, but knowing what I know now, I'd avoid them altogether.

Thank you for the information. I don't take Advil every day, but I do take it a few days a week. I will make sure I stop it right now.

Hi there,

I had heard recently that nurofen is not to be taken during TWW as it can affect implantation.

I was also on diclofenac for my endometriosis and was told by my GP to stop taking that as it can affect fertility.

I had also been prescribed by the locum doctor another painkiller called feldene melts, and its a good job I read the leaflet everytime I get a new script because that even says that it can affect fertility!!

Sounds like your GP is more clued up than mine! I'll fix that this week though

My usual GP is normally spot on, its always when I see a locum or another doctor at the surgery, thats when I start getting scripts for random stuff your not supposed to take or that can affect fertiltiy.

Because my GP has been through my LTTTC journey with me for 10 years, I don't have to remind her I am TTC, so she knows what I should and shouldn't take.

That's really good.

I see a different doctor everytime I go to in but that's mostly because I work 35 miles away from home so I have to take appointments that fit in with work. I'm going to try my best to keep it to one of 2 or 3 doctors from now on.
