We're a bit confused/concerned about our wee boy, he's 5wks tomorrow.
He started out on sma but fussed a lot taking it and didn't have a dirty nappy for over 5 days, he didn't seem in any pain with it, and the midwife wasn't concerned (he wasn't feeding enough in the start, so they thought it was his system catching up), with the fussing while feeding we decided to swap him to cow & gate which he takes a lot easier, but again not had a dirty nappy for 4 days. Due to this and reading online about apatamil we've just swapped to this.
How frequently does your lo have a dirty nappy? Are we right being concerned that he's only having a dirty nappy every 4 days? But doesn't seem constipated/have symptoms of constipation or be in any pain, plus has a wet nappy at every change.
Have seen comfort milk in Tesco but if he's not constipated would this actually do anything? Ps I know c & g and apatamil ingredients/nutrients are the same bar a few values.
Apologies for such a novice question but first time parents here, and we want to do the best for our wee man (our hv isn't very helpful)!

My baby is almost 9 weeks, weighs 9lb2 & has a lot of wet nappies probably around 10 per day and 2-3 pooey nappies each day.
She is on 6-7 - 180ml (6oz) bottles per day :) xx

Hi there, my LO is 16 weeks and up until a few weeks ago she was doing dirty nappies every 4 days. She does not have a dirty nappy every day possibly every other but does have quite a few wet ones!! Hope this helps :)

Thank you for the replies :) I guess so long as he's not in pain/discomfort it's okay. He's taking between 3 and 4 oz every 3-4hrs. At last weigh he was 8lbs.
Lots of wet nappies so kidneys defo doing what they should.
Thanks :)

Sounds like he is doing well :) As a first time parent also, at times it can be scary just wanting to get things right. For me it really is a case of learning on the job :)

Usually it's around day 10 a pediatrician becomes concerned that a baby has not poo'd. I am unsure of the protocol when it's 4 days between often.

You can try colic calm, which is an herbal medication for infants. It treats gas, constipation, tummy upset, hiccups, and vomiting.

My DS has always had 2-3 poo's a day.

Try not to worry. As previously stated, most medical-type people are concerned until about 7+ days. It's all a guessing game to be honest.

Plus, if you or your oh don't need to 'pass solids' (sorry) everyday, it's possible that your lo won't need to either.

We tend to get only one dirty nappy a day, but LOTS of wet ones.

I asked my HV about this the other day and she said formula fed babies should ideally have one poopy nappy every day to every other day, though going a little longer than that sometimes is okay too. My daughter is 11 weeks and poos about 4-5 times a week, so it's not everyday and sometimes she can go 4 days and then poo twice in one day. I have found if she seems uncomfortable putting some gripe water in one bottle helps to make her feel better and pushes things through within about 12 hours. But if your baby is still small I wouldn't worry too much as they all have thwir own routines. My daughter was BF for the first 8 weeks and she still didn't poo everyday then.

Thank you for all the replies, a wee update - he's still not had a poo, yesterday afternoon and last night he was very uncomfy and unsettled, so this morning my hubby took him to the docs. The doc checked him over and has prescribed lactilose (sp) syrup for him. He's had a two doses of it today and has looked like he's been straining a couple of times. As yet no dirty nappies though but the doc said it could take a couple of days, thanks again :)

DD is 13 weeks and usually goes once every 3 days. When she was on Good Start she would go everyday but she was sooo gassy and sooo uncomfortable. So I put her on Parent's Choice and she's doing a lot better. Still gassy but at least you don't need the Febreze to get rid of the smell and she's not in pain. As long as the poo is soft and pasty it's fine:winkwink:

If you see him straining to get things out..you can move his legs in circles to relieve the pressure.

Also what helps my lo is taking a Q-tip dipped in Vasaline and inserting it just a wee bit in his bum (similar to taking a rectal temp).
