Every time we give our son Nurofen (when he has a fever or something) within about 20 minutes he is off like a rocket. He is running around, rolling about and generally hyperactive. Every single time we give him this medicine. It was the same with Calpol, which we stopped giving him for that reason as the Nurofen seemed to not affect him as badly. But now it seems just the same as Calpol.

Does this happen to any one else's child? Why does it make them so hyperactive? I'm starting to dread giving him any medicine when he is poorly. Honestly he looked so feeble and lifeless, laying on the sofa stripped down to just his nappy. He had a temperature and was very hot to touch. Then 20 minutes later was running around like a Tasmanian devil lol.

It could just be that he is feeling better so perks up.

Do you have the sugar free Calpol and Nurofen? Even the sugar free ones have sweeteners which some people believe make children hyper. Not sure if it is true or not but some people also believe the food colouring used in these medicines can make children hyperactive.

Yes I always buy the sugar free ones. I don't think it is to do with him feeling better, because even for him being his usual energetic self, this is completely different. He is almost bouncing off the walls.

I've never noticed this with my oldest and calpol but last night I gave my youngest some nurofen and couldn't believe the difference, he went from miserable crying teething and suffering from a cold to a right happy bunny giggling away. I thought it was just him but obviously not

It could be the sweetners in it affecting him. I'd try the non sugar free and see if there is any difference. If not then I'd go down the road of reducing the temp without medicines.
