So i had to see the gp nurse today because ive just swapped doctors surgeries and they wanted me to have checks due to pregnancy.

So anyway she takes my blood pressure and says its a bit high. She then starts going on about some condition which can effect first time mothers (ecto something? not sure) and that one of the signs is high blood pressure. She then says ''oh but thats usually indicated by a urine problem as well - but yours is clear''.

So im sitting there all worried - but suggest she takes my blood pressure again because i get a bit whoozy over things like that and this may have affected it. So i try to relax and she does it again - and sure enough this time its lower. I knew this would happen as its happened before where its lower once i manage to relax!

BUT now all i can think about is this condition she said about!!!! I mean, what on earth!!!

why worry people like that?????

sorry for rant

ive never heard of this condition! mine was the opposite she did my urine dip and i dont think she even had time to look at it as she chucked it in the bin & said 'its fine', even though i told her i'd done one at work the week before & it was positive for protein  well, shes the expert lol xx

i didnt get any feed back on urine either. she just dipped something in, said its clear and that was that! apparently was checking for abnormalities to do with kidneys etc - but more info would have been nice haha :)

My doc freaked me out when I saw him to confirm I was pregnant at about 5 weeks!

He told me to take it easy and said "especially as you are over 35 I would say to take things very easy" and then proceeded to tell me that the risk of miscarriage was "1 in 3"! Not sure if he meant at that early stage or what but it freaked me out and is probably a big reason why I have been so anxious all the way through First Tri! :nope:

When I told my midwife she was pretty horrified and said what he'd said was a load of rubbish, that 36 is not old these days and my risk of mc is hardly any higher at all than someone younger. So she was a lot nicer

I do think these medical people freak you out a lot of the time x

hun if your urine came back clear then its likely the raised bp was over something else and isnt something to be worried about

do you mean pre-eclampsia btw? symptoms of that are high BP & protein in urine. along with swelling. my mum had it with me. quite rare tho xx

High blood pressure and protein in the urine can indicate preeclampsia, but you're not far enough along to worry about that. I can't think of what else she might have been referring to.

I think health care providers sometimes need a reminder as to how much pregnant women tend to worry.:flower:

YES THATS IT! just read about it and now im nervous lol!! but my urine was clear.... provided the test she did would have picked up onhigh amount of protein.

when she said its usualy accompanied by urine problems i asked again whether mine was ok and she sd yes.... grrrrr... wish she had never mentioned this LOL

even worse that she mentioned it if im not far along enough lol!

although they are officially dating me at 7 weeks now... but i KNOW i have a long 37 day cycle, so im keeping my ticker at 6w1d until my scan next week :)

Well I went for an early scan on thursday - i should have been almost 8 weeks (7 weeks 6 days), and when i went in it took the lady doing the scan about twenty minutes to find the baby who was measuring 6 weeks instead of almost 8 weeks and she then proceeded to tell me that she 'thought' she could see a heartbeat and then ended the scan and said come back in 10 days... now i have to wait til next monday to make sure everything is okay.

Don't worry hun. You would not develop pre eclampsia at this stage of pregnancy. It is way too early. You will feel much more reassured when you see your midwife. A practice nurse doesn't really have that much to do with pregnant women as a general rule so if you have any worries ask your midwife.

She said you haven't got it! :haha:

But my point is that she straight away mentioned it. I then had to question her about the condition for her to say (almost as an after thought) ''oh but your urine is clear''.

She did my urine test as soon i walked in so why mention this condition at all later - if i clearly do not have it???

My point isnt that im worried about having it - but that some nurses / doctors say things without thinking!!!! :growlmad:

Its not very nice.

Aw honey, that sounds a bit stressful. I went for an early scan at what I thought was 6 weeks and 4 days and was put back by nearly a week to 5 weeks and 6 days. The nurse said at the first scan it's really common to be out by a week or even up to 2 weeks. Also she told me that there was a tiny flicker of a heartbeat. This freaked me out because I thought this meant it was something abnormal so I asked her if this was bad and she said, "Oh no, the heartbeat has got to start somewhere!!!" - anyway much as it's hard not to worry about things - I think that it's normal that it can be difficult to detect a heartbeat until after 6 weeks. Oh, and re the dates being out, I think it probably means your implantation took a bit longer than you think or maybe you ovulated a bit later?

For the original poster too - how confusing and annoying was that nurse? sounds like everything is ok but why do they worry you like that? :growlmad:

Ooh so your not worried now?
Sorry hun, I thought you were still thinking you could have it.

I do agree though, they tend to say things thinking we can work the rest of it out ourselves but forget we haven't had the training they're had!

yer im not worried now, just angry that i had to ask questions in order for her to say ''oh but you dont have it because..'' - just makes me mad!

ive let it go now though haha. But i dare her to say one more thing when i see her next haha!

I've seen enough doctors and midwives to know that some of them aren't too careful about what they say to you.

And it's not entirely because of their job, it's because they are people and some people are like that, blurt out anything and then wonder why you are worried or upset.

As doctors and midwives though, some of them forget that we don't know as much as them or that this is our first pregnancy while they see hundreds of pregnant women every week and they forget that a casual comment they think is obviously nothing to worry about is something that can drive us mad with worry, because it's NOT obvious to us.

On the other hand, they do need to make everyone aware of things because if you do start to have odd symptoms for something then you can get it checked out and either be reassured or treated appropriately.

If you don't know what to look out for and think something is normal or not worth bothering them for and it does turn out to be something they need to know they wouldn't be doing their job properly if they hadn't said something to warn you.

It's a fine line between being aware of problems that may or may not happen and another to be worried for nine long months about something. So they really do need to be careful with what they say and how they say it.

But at least now you know it happens sometimes to some women and although it's unlikely to happen to you it's given you a chance to find out what to do if you are concerned. :hugs:
