Hello..
My little girl is 6 weeks old.
She was b.fed for 3 weeks and went on to cow and gate.
At first all was well. Within 4 days a rash started appearing on her chin(s) and neck. It would always be lurking but really redden after a feed with raised bumps, some almost with whiteheads.
HV said it looked like heat rash.
We stripped her down, baths, patted with talc to keep dry, naked for hours and it continued to spread.
Back, chest, hair, ears, eye lids etc... she also had really terrible wind and would have a habit of throwing up in her sleep anything up to 2hrs after a bottle.
She has always had a bit of colic in the evenings but it seemed to get worse.
The rash was so bad I knew that there was more to it and took her to doctors who immediatley said is she bottle fed and has the rash got worse since being b.fed (which it had).
GP then prescribed Nutramigen 1.
Little one started yday, took to it fine - which suprised me as it is revolting. She is going longer between feeds, 4hrs now instead of 3hrs but her wind is still terrible - she screams with it now and it is near on impossible to get up!
She is still sick - it is very watery though and it smells terrible.
The rash however doesn't flare up and is going away.
I thought it was also supposed to benefit a colic baby and not make them as sick?? has anyone else had this issue or is it just a case of her getting used to it??
Also, the rash, what does it mean she is allergic to? milk in general or something in it?? doctor didn't go into much detail...

We tried this formula with DD but she couldn't handle it - we tried Alimentum next - before having to move on to Amino Acid based formula.

A formula change can take up to 2 weeks and can get worse before it gets better. I'd call the doctor Monday morning and explain this all to the nurse. Your babe's doctor might want you to switch again.

The rash and poops do make me think milk protein intolerance. Have you noticed any blood in the stool? We've had DD's poop tested for blood.

We had similar experience and DD was sent to an allergist for a skin prick test and had various blood tests done, one of which was called a RAST test. She has a cow's milk protein allergy and was prescribed Alimentum. She wouldn't drink it at all. Same with Nutramigen. It is horrendous stuff and made me heave! In the end the pediatrician agreed we could try soy, although some babies with milk allergy are also allergic to soy. Thankfully she wasn't and is now fine with it. However, her rash still flares up from time to time, no-one knows why, and we have to apply corticosteroid cream as prescribed by the dermatologist. They are sending us back to the allergist for more tests when she is one to see if she has outgrown the milk allergy as most babies do by this age apparently.

She was also diagnosed with colic and reflux too as she used to vomit and cry all the time. Unfortunately she was allergic to reflux meds too but that is whole a different story.

What I will say is be very careful when you introduce food to her. If she does have a milk allergy you will have to look out for any traces of milk in everything and avoid it all. Its also under a variety of other names too not just labelled as milk but whey, casein etc. If this is the case your doctor should be able to give you a list of names to avoid. LO also had a severe reaction to beef, which when I spoke to the pediatrician she said that a very small percentage of babies with milk allergy are also affected by the meat...same protein.

:hugs: to you it can be very difficult I know.

we had to use nutramigen for my son when he was a baby and had no problems with him on it, but with my lil girl shes on comfort milk and gets really bad trapped wind, the dr brown bottles really help with that and i find stirring the milk instead of shaking it helps to mix less air into the milk and she seems to burp alot easier than before switching bottles, i stumbled upon stirring as you cant shake the dr b bottles as they leak if u shake.

i hope this helps a bit

Hope you get it sorted. Edward was prescribed this but flat out refused to drink it because it was revolting so you've got further than us  x
