hey ladies

been to hospital with abigail today and they think she might poss have a lactose intolerance (stool samples to confirm soon)

she has been put onto nutramigen formula. any mums use this/have used this and anything i should know/any advice?

much appreciated :)

I don't use nutramigen but my LO is on lactose free formula.

Just be careful when weaning. Lactose is in a lot of ready made baby food xx

Hi yes my LO is on nutramigen. Its very good, make up as normal formula but you can keep it in the fridge instead of having to make bottles up as you go along! Sophie has been on this for just over 3 months now and is growing well and very happy with it. We are having a meeting with the hospital in 2 weeks to see if she has outgrown the allergy. Let me know if you have any questions about it :)

Hey Alyssa is on Nutramigen. The tins dont last many days so we get prescribed 10 at a time. Luckily Alyssa is outgrowing her dairy allergy as he has dairy products in her weaning but will have to stay on Nutramigen till a year old. Hopefully your LO will outgrow too. Some babies incl Alyssa had trouble at 1st adjusting to the formula as it tastes and smells completely different to the normal formulas, but once fully on it, its made our milk times so much more enjoyable :)

Can i just ask you ladies how you knew your LO's were lactose intollerant?

thanks for the reassurances ladies!

if you dont mind me asking, how did you get her to take the milk, cos abi really isnt a fan. im mixing 4oz of aptamil with the 4oz of nutramigen and she is still turning her nose up!

and to all you mummies, maybe abit too much to ask, but how are your LO's bowel movements? the main reason for abi's change onto this milk is to do with her bowel and stomach problems. if they were bad before did they improve? and what are the textures/colours now they are on this formula

thanks in advance

I had to do it very slowly.. so it took AGES. so for 6oz of milk she had i had to go 5oz normal formula and 1oz nutramigen. HV said to up it every 5 days but i did it every day because she needed to be on it for a reason. She seemed to take it then. So today try just one oz of it then tomorrow increase to 2oz if she ok with that then carry on increasing each day. Im useless in telling you about her bowel movements though as that wasnt the problem with Alyssa. It was just constant screaming. HTH x

tbh i wouldnt have had a clue!

since abi was born she has had bowel and stomach problems. she was BF for 6 weeks, moved onto to Aptamil 1 for 4 weeks then aptamil 2 at 10 weeks. when she was BF she wouldnt go for 10 days at a time so moved her to formula. now she has constipation and diahorea in the same nappy (hard lumps followed by water) and its always dark green in colour. she is always cramping up and rolling around in pain.

i dont think these symptoms pint to a lactose intolerance if im perfectly honest and the thing thats worrying me is that her poo has turned green and the new formula is supposed to make poo green so im never gonna find out why it went green in the first place!

am really stressing myself out over this

I never knew you could put it in the fridge I've been making it as I go along. Will teach me for never reading the tin properly just read the bit at the end that said don't refrigerate lol.
With Abi she had constant diarhoea and really bad wind and in the evening and through the night she was screaming constantly unless she was upright with me patting and rubbing her back I was getting about an hours sleep a night. The nutramigen has an instant effect it was amazing.
It did take us about a week to get her solely on the milk without mixing EBM but we just changed the amounts everyday making the formula stronger.
The only problem we have now is she is constipated but still seems happier this way and sugar water seems to be helping at the mo.

my son has been on nutramigen since he was 4 months so about a year now due to lactose intolerance i found with him i had to just switcgh and then when he was hungry he just took it
because nutramigen is a hydrolised milk it does make poo small and look a bit funny archies is normally green(obvs now hes weaned its better)i got told the reason for the greeness is caused too by the fact that nutramigen has some soya in

to the poster who asked about knowing your baby is lactose intolerant: theres no surefire way of knowing but there are some strong indicators if that makes sense
archie as a newborn would never settle he always had terrible gripes and wind and constsntly was screwing his knees up and thrutching like he needed to poo. he went from constipated to dioreah and back daily. he was sickly and had an awful red rash all over his face(excema)

i found when weaning it was best not really to use jars as some things didnt say if they contained lactose :although towards the end i found a couple of cow and gate jars. Archie only had a month of puree though when i discovered baby led weaning which for us was better as i know if i cooked something for us i could make it without using lactose

hth xx
