I had hyperemesis gravidarum in my 1st trimester, I lost 8 lbs and I was just constantly throwing up, my prenatals were not helping, they made me gag and feel even more sick. Now that Im in my 2nd tri Im starting to feel slightly better but I still throw up at least 3-4 times a week, sometimes I just can't deal and I occasionally skip my prenatal vitamin for the day and Im fine that day--no sickness but then I feel horribly guilty, I dont want to cheat the baby out of essential vitamins but my body can only handle so much throwing up, I asked my doctor and she told me its ok sometimes If Im not comfortable taking the pills then I dont have too but I still am soo worried, I dont wan my baby to end up with any defects or illness because of this, I did really good in my 1st trimester taking my pills all the time, I even started taking my prenatals 2 months before I got pregnant but when the sickness kicked in once a week I would skip my pill, Im just wondering if any of you ladies have done this? Or f this is normal and safe??

I thought they were most important in the first trimester anyway. I'm the same, end up skipping mine sometimes, they are so enormous they make me gag! I'm sure LO is doing well!

Some says that changing the brand of the prenatal vitamin may help with the nausea. Also take the pill with food, and never with empty stomach.

And about being safe skipping the vitamin, it is absolutely fine, as long as you get the necessary nutrient from other sources. You should be able to get plenty of folic acid from different type of food.

i feel terrible because i haven't taken mine in over 3 weeks. I've skipped a whole alot! Everytime i take them tho i feel horrid. I'm going to start back tho because my nausea and everything has gone away. I just feel so horrible about it :(

Through my pregnancy with my daughter I didn't take my prenatals for more that the first month or so as I was being sick every day. I talked to my doctor and because I eat/ate a pretty balanced diet he said if I couldn't do it I couldn't do it. My daughter came out fine, perfectly healthy and happy. I don't recommend it if it can be avoided but don't feel guilty. I went through my whole preg feeling awfully guilty and stressed that I was hurting baby by not taking them but as you say you can only handle so much being sick. I've heard of some people taking a couple of kids chewables so that they are getting something but I'd check with your doctor first

I only took my vits in the first tri. I dont take any anymore, i just try and eat well and at my 20 week scan last week baby was healthy and growing well. xx

I also only took mine in the first trimester. There is no real benefit to continuing them (apart from to the companies we are buying them from) as the real benefit is from the folic acid, which baby needs lots of until the 12th week of pregnancy. My midwife said there was no need to take them after first tri - so I wouldn't worry hun x

I agree with the above 2 posters... I only took mine in First Tri and now I'm relying mostly on eating properly! My mum didn't take ANY with me and I was 8lbs 4oz (or 6..can't remember) and perfectly fine...My aunt didn't with her little boy and he's fine, my step-mum didn't with her two and they're fine... One or both of them actually asked me what I meant when I said about taking prenatals...

Our bodies are built to support baby, the prenatals are mostly for our benefit (if you're eating properly)...because baby is draining all he/she needs from us..

My LO was measuring correctly at our 18 week scan... I'm still being pestered by my nurse (I was actually scared to tell her I hadn't taken any) as she gave me a load of samples for prescription only ones (higher dosage and she said that regular prenatals from the shop are practically useless as they don't contain enough of anything... Uhhh, our grandparents did fine just eating plenty of fruit and veg!!! :dohh:)... I'm just taking some regular one a day vits as and when I remember, but only half dose as they contain Vitamin A (not in Beta Carotene version) and that can be harmful to bubs in large amounts. I also top up with some Folic Acid pills when I remember/get pestered too.. IMO it's healthier to get the vitamins from their natural source, instead of the nasty submarine sized pills!!

xx

I've been forgetting mine too. I get in bed and then realize "oops i forgot my pills"

I've never taken them  My MW told me that unless you eat unhealthily, there's really no need. Obviously I took folic acid, but I stopped nearly 14 weeks ago! x
