Has anyone given antibiotics to a baby this young? I'm just worried that he has to take 2.5ml 3x a day for 7 days because his eyes are not clearing up! I'm just concerned cause his still so young?

basically since he was a day old his eyes had been tearing and been oozing with this green discharge. We've been washing with cool boiled water and cotton wool, his also been using these drops from 2 days of age as we were sent to ane to have them looked at. The Dr took a swab which showed nothing. Once the drops finished I took him gp at 2 weeks of age who prescribed eye ointment which again hadn't made a difference but the swab the gp took has shown something is growing on it so he needs antibiotics

Apparently he may have caught something from the birth canal :( I feel so bad that I'm the reason he eyes have been like this all this time! No infection ever came up at any of my antenatal apts so I don't know?

I just hope this antibiotics can finally treat his eyes

My dd2 had IV antibiotics and anti virals at 1 week old. Then again at 2 months and oral antibiotics at 3 months. If they are required (and having swab results means that they are, and they should be sure that they have prescribed the right one for the problem) taking them is the lesser of two evils. Just be ready for some runny nappies and maybe a bit of belly ache, which are normal side effects of oral antibiotics. :flower:

How were you given it to her at 2 months? I was told it would come with a syringe but nope. I'm using a spoon now. It was hard at first and he was spitting it out, I think his kinda getting use to it and I even done it today whilst he was sleeping.

Today is day 4 of being on it and all I've noticed is smelly farts not much else yet

Thank you for replying x

He could have caught it from the birth canal but they dont really know, it could have come from anywhere. Hospitals are one of the worst places on earth to catch nasty infections but they are probably less inclined to blame themselves; ).

Maybe look into a probiotic to help his gut recover after the antibiotics are finished.

She had them IV again at two months, but oral at three. They did give us a syringe to administer it, but she was already having multiple liquid meds a day by then, so had a fair few to hand. The pharmacy should provide you with at least one and if they didn't it's worth going back and asking for one (some places are horrible and will try to charge you) but you should get at least one free. The dose for a one month old would not be very accurate by spoon. Hope your little one is on top form soon x

Today is day 5 and his eyes are still the same? When do you usually notice a difference when on antibiotics?

With an adult I would expect to see an improvement in 48hrs or less but if they have given the lowest dose because he is so young it may be that it isn't working. I'd go back to the doctors if I were you.

Don't beat yourself up about where he caught it. Yes, there are some infections that can be passed on from you but the birth canal is also thought to be full of lots of protective factors (so much so that in some cesarian births, midwives/doctors are grabbing vaginal mucus and smearing it on the baby's face to ensure they are exposed to the "normal" bacteria etc.). It may be that what was cultured isn't even causing the eye discharge (perhaps why antibiotics aren't working) and it may be viral in which case he could have got it ANYWHERE.
