online flight check in question--British passport holders

Question for all with a British Passport, are you usually able to check in online for American destination flights? My boyfriend is in Canada atm and flying back home tomorrow night with a stop at JFK,hes gone out for the night and txt me asking to check him in and email him the boarding pass. Just tried and I'm not able to check him in, I am thinking its because he needs a visa for the USA part of his trip?? I am a Canadian citizen so never had this problem before.

ETA: hes got the visa done already so not worried about that just wanted to select his seat for him!

You don't need a Visa to visit the US if you're from the UK.

sorry I should have been more specific on the visa front, I was talking about the ESTA.

managed to do it thru the partner airline, how strange.
