I've had an interview this morning for a job 16 hours a week over 3 days.. Rang the local nursery and they charge £102.. Rang HMRC and my total weekly CTC entitlement including childcare will be £133 a week so I'm not going to be much better off if I accept the job and now I don't know what to do :(

You would be more than £20 better off because you would also have your wage on top?

Nope that's including my wages.. I've just worked it all out on a budget sheet

At the moment we get £240 OH wage, £25 week WTC, £62 CTC, £20 a week and HB £10 a week.

If I accept the job it will be Oh wage, my wage £115, CTC £133, £20 CB but would have to pay more rent, childcare £102 a week and then travel costs.

I just don't know what to do

If the nursery is charging £102 a week and you are getting £133 a week CTC would that not mean you would be £31 a week better off plus your wages?

You're in a better position than a lot of mums who don't get that kind of help with childcare :flower: I guess it depends on how you feel about being home vs work, I've always enjoyed work so to me that seems the perfect balance especially because you will be earning a wage so will be paying for rent yourself getting less from the state, I've been in your situation before and I loved being able to pay my own way. I would always choose to work, you've just got to decide how you want to spend your weeks I guess. Are you planning a second? Because working until your second will mean maternity pay etc. Also remaining in the workplace can be a good financial investment in the long run than removing yourself, potentially working your way up, not having to reapply for jobs after an employment gap etc.

Nope I'm not planning on a 2nd anytime soon, if ever. I did a budget sheet on the money advice service as we are now and then one as though we are both working and that's where I got the £20 from.

I just went on the HMRC benefits calculator and it said we will get £183 CTCa week but the man on the phone when I rang up said £133

So you would have 31 left from tax credits after childcare, plus both your wages and child benefit and only pay a tenner more a week in rent?

Yes but I would need to pay £20 for a bus pass weekly too. The way you put it makes it sound like we should have a lot left but I double checked everything I put on the budget sheet and that's the numbers it gave me

No it's all relative, what may sound a lot to one isn't to another, much dependant on outgoings. Was just trying to work it out as I got stupidly confused when you added the initial figures in the op.

I'm confused by it all too

I've decided to accept the job if they offer it to me. They said I'd know by the end of the day and it's 5.30pm now so not feeling very hopeful :(

As your oh will be off why not have him do a day or two child are instead of forking out the nursery? You could then re evaluate when he goes back to work?

My OH is in a lot of pain and is struggling to pick LO up at the moment so that wouldn't be an option. It's 7.05pm now and not had a phone call so it's safe to say I've not been successful :(

Personally I think even if it's "only" £20 better off, is take the job. Earning your money to me is always the better option.
£20 to some is a lot of money and if I could increase my income by £20, I would

I didn't read all the post as usual lol
Good luck on ur job hunt if u don't get this one, u never know, they may call tomorrow

£20 is a lot of money to me but doesn't seem much in comparison to not working. Surely it should be a lot more compared to not working. None of my friends with children choose to work because they say it isn't worth their while. I have decided I do want to work because I'm sick of being stuck in the house.

People saying "it isn't worth their while" when it comes to not working really piss me off.
I think working for what u have and like u say getting out the house is worth this!
I won't go into a rant, so ile stop at that lol
Ur lucky when it comes to nursery fees, my sons is £401 a month and that's only for 2 days a week! I don't get help with these fees.
For ur own sanity and some self respect show people that u can be a mother and work, u can earn ur own money and have more of a social life....teach those that it is worth while to work

A few years ago when my 12&10 year olds were little I worked at a loss for months, but I wanted to work so I did.

Now things are different, we have a 4 yo as well but I am no longer worse off, hiwever I would 100% still do it even if we were

I currently do 36 hours a week. We pay £1700 a month in childcare costs..........We do get Vouchers which takes it down £486, then WTC of about £750 so still have £450 to pay. I only get paid £1100 a month...I do question if its worth it, but I dont think I could stay at home witht eh both of them, as we would have no money and so I would be stuck at home.......in a rural location, slowly and surely going crazy!
