ONLY..Wet Paper towels vs. Commercial Wipes for Newborns.

I learned at one of those hospital classes I recently took to stay away from commercial wipes for baby's 1st wk or 2 of life, to avoid irritation to baby's skin. And to use wet paper towels instead. Anyone heard of this before??? How are you guys planning on cleaning your babies tush and front during diaper changes for the 1st few wks? When is it safe to transition to commercial wipes? Is it ONLY water or or water and a mild soap? And....is there a convenient way to store these wipes in advance, maybe to keep by your changing pad stations? (like in a Tupperware I was thinking).

We used cotton wool balls to clean DD for the first 3 months of her life then switched to sensitive wipes..... Just packed my hospital bags this morning & I am doing the same with this baby

There are lots of options, we are using cloth nappies so have cloth wipes which we'll use with water or cotton wool pads or there is a product called 'water wipes' which I believe can be used from birth as they don't contain any nasty chemicals

Don't suppose it really matters which. But paper towels would break up more? I bought one of those big rolls of cotton wool. X

Cotton wool here, it's cheap and soft and you can squash a LOT of it into a nappy bag. We carried a small spray bottle with just water in and used that until Eli was able to run off then we gave in and used wipes (so about 10 months - poopy bums running off across the room isn't ideal and wipes were quicker!!)

Also, if you've ever wiped your bum with a baby wipe...it actually doesn't feel very nice!!!!

We used cotton wool balls and water for first few months and water wipes then instead of other commercial wipes that contain chemicals and perfumes. We just recently switched over to cloth wipes which we dampen and keep in a tupperware box. I just use water on mine but some people use a solution they make up themselves.

We use cotton wool and water for the first week and then transitioned to sensitive fragrance free wipes. I have never heard of using paper towels and imagine it would just break up as you tried to wipe

To be honest, we used Pampers Sensitive wipes from the get-go and never had a problem, but I've heard great things about cotton wool too.

Will also be using cotton wool and warm water from the start for as long as I can manage, at least the first month or so (first baby, I don't know how it will be!) and then I've bought a big stock of Water Wipes from Amazon, as pp are saying, have a look at them, they are lovely and they feel soft on my skin too

I'll be using Huggies Pure wipes which say they're the same as using cotton wool and water but more durable and less faff. I won't rule out cotton wool of course.. but I use the wipes all the time and they have zero fragrance. Plus they're softer than usual wipes so you don't get that scratchy feeling. (I've tested on my face which has eczema and this doesnt turn it blotchy)

Cotton wool and warm water for the first few weeks. Poo will be pretty runny for quite a while anyway... but oh my the convenience you will have when you start using wipes is amazing! xxx

I will use wipes from day one unless obviously baby's skin has issues with them, my son didn't I can't be bothered faffing with wool and such things x

I def would not use huggies pure they blister my hands!!! The ingredients list is unreal but then i don't find cleaning a child inconvenient tbh it only takes a minute

That's weird they've always been ok on babies I know. Maybe you used the fragranced versions? :/ I'll think again about buying them. May try out the water wipes as I've got a few brands for sensitive skin like pampers. x

We used Huggies Aloe Vera from day 1. No issues. I'm afraid I do find cotton wool to be a bit of a faff. Particularly with a toddler around! In our house it's done as fast as poss.

Glad to hear your LO is ok with Huggies. I have the aloe ones and the plain ones. I'm a FTM so it's all trial and error for me but I do have super sensitive skin so I know how important it is to watch out for irritants x

We used cotton wool and warm water for the first couple of weeks then moved on to Pampers Sensitive wipes without a problem. Planning to do the same this time and have already started stocking up on wipes.
