ONLY..Wet Paper towels vs. Commercial Wipes for Newborns.

We got some of the cotton wool baby pad things they're like the make up remover pads but much bigger. Hospital here said they don't allow wipes so will use then there and see how we go.

We've also stocked up on pampers and huggies wipes whenever they've been on sale.

It annoys me when these wipes claim to be fragrance free - sniff them, they smell! Also if it was the same as using cotton wool and water then the only ingredient listed wud be water! To be honest tho i only stuck to cotton wool for a week or 2 i did find it too much of a faff.

I also dislike huggies cos they rip when u pull them out of the packet, very annoying especially when ur trying to control a baby with the other arm!

Well I found the Huggies Aloe Vera to be fab. I don't like Pampers Sensitive, they smell weird.

Also if the hospital had told me they didn't 'allow' wipes I would have said something quite rude I expect.

My child, my choice. Particularly on something like this. Clearly if there's a reaction we won't use them again! Same with anything.

I guess at the end of the day as long as you're LO is not reacting to products then it doesn't really matter what you use as long as it gets the job done. It will be trial and error for us so we have a few brands of wipes stocked up and cotton wool on stand by. I'll just monitor her to make sure there's no sign of redness/soreness. It's the same with bottles. What works for one child may not work so well for another. x

Exactly. I have used commercial wipes on my other 2 and had no problems at all. Unfortunatly number 3 has eczema and allergies which is why we stick to water and cloth wipes now. I did use cotton wool and water on them all at first just caus I wanted to be gentle with their newborn skin.
Now that we are staying away from chemicals and perfumes for my 3rd anyway we will stick with that as it is what we are used to now.

in the uk it's recommended to use water and cotton wool (and olive oil for sticky meconium etc)

I asked a few weeks ago where I can get decent baby cotton wool as I hadn't seen it in the USA and was surprised to be told it's not really used for babies here.

I personally wouldn't use paper towels as a bit rough so have bulk ordered some cotton wool!

I used mainly cotton wool for the first the months. If I needed to use wipes I used the nature baby ones. They cost more but my son has ridiculously sensitive skin.

With my first they tried to make me use cotton wool and water in the hospital. Yeah... Cotton wool and meconium is just yuerk. If anybody else wants to mess around then that's fair enough but personally it's wipes all the way for us! I use fragrance free and sensitive ones and never had a problem x

The ingredients in wipes really turns me off using them. I'm going to make my own wipes but use water wipes for when we're out I think.

Yes you can hun, try boots. They're usually by the nappies and muslin cloths. Also I got a free sample pack of them from either Emma's diary or bounty I can't remember.

That's weird they've always been ok on babies I know. Maybe you used the fragranced versions? :/ I'll think again about buying them. May try out the water wipes as I've got a few brands for sensitive skin like pampers. x

Really weird!! My son was ok with them, i waited til my hands were healed (not a problem i generally have) tried them again to see if it really was that - yup skin clustered again and took weeks to heal, really put me off!!!!

I used cotton wool and water for the first few weeks then when his system became more regular and cotton wool couldn't cut it any more, we started using wipes. The hospital I gave birth in had Pseudomonas in the taps that infected several premature babies who fell ill and died, so I'll be taking my own bottled water from home to use for washing and cleaning my LO.
