Hi ladies, hope you can help. I have had a "stomach upset" for nearly a week now. Later today, I am supposed to be travelling an hour and a half each way to visit family. I really want to go, but the journey is risky unmedicated because, after 2 births, if I need to go I need to go now if I have loose stools (sorry tmi!).

I bought some Imodium. The leaflet says not to be taken if breastfeeding because some may pass into the breast milk. I have read conflicting advice online though. The kellysmom list says this is only in the "L2" category, which says although a small amount may pass into milk, there's little or no affect on the baby. I also read that only about 1% passes into the milk. The chemist was closed so I could not get advice from the pharmacist, I bought it in a grocery shop.

Since my LO is nearly 10 months old he doesn't nurse very regularly in the day or have that much milk (especially at the moment with my supply being affected by this stomach upset).

Have any of you ladies taken Imodium while breastfeeding? Has anyone had medical advice to say it is ok to do this? And does anyone know how long after taking this medicine it would take to clear from my breast milk?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Yes, I took it two or three times while breastfeeding and had no problems. Hope this helps!

I've taken a few whilst breast feeding with no problems.

hi - resurrecting this old thread because i have the same issue. nhs does not recommend imodium but there is conflicting advice online. for those of you who have suffered from diarrhoea when breastfeeding, did you take imodium, were there any issues, did the drs offer you any alternatives? also, if you took it, did you take just the 2 initial capsules or additional capsules for each loose movement after that?

my diarrhoea started on thurs, i took 2 capsules initially then realised it wasnt recommended so didn't take any more. it went away then until tonight when i've been to the loo about 10 times in the last hour. i got desperate so took the initial 2 capsules again. just waiting for them to work and hoping my breastfed son stays asleep for a couple of hours!
