I have noticed that when I am breast feeding Jaedan now a days that he will be feeding without any problems and then after a bit he will start grunting, clawing, pulling away from the breast and then he'll burst into tears :hissy:. When I offer the breast again, he takes it without a problem and then the same thing happens again and again until he is able to settle and fall asleep.

This happens mostly during the evenings and I asked my nurse about it and I felt that what she said made no sense at all. She was saying that its because he's had enough and then he decides he wants more.. I don't think this is the case because when he lets go of my nipple when he's crying and he feels my nipple when I'm offering it again (within the space of a few seconds) he grabs onto my breast and starts feeding as if he's starving, until the cycle starts again with the crying.

I feel horrible because it seems as if he's in so much pain/discomfort and I'm not sure what to do. It gets a little frustrating sometimes because he'll pull away and get milk all over me and himself, and if I'm trying to feed in public, its hard to stay covered up..

Sometimes, when I put my nipple in his mouth, its like he doesn't even know its there and he's fighting with me for it and crying even though its in his mouth. I have read about thrush and I'm not sure if this may be the case or not because I don't have any symptoms.. my breasts/nipples are fine. And his tongue is a bit white (which I figured was just the milk) but there is nothing on the inside of his cheeks.

Like I said earlier, this doesn't happen all the time, just with some feedings each day. I have started using a bit of gripe water to calm him down which seems to do the trick sometimes, which is why I think it may also be a gas issue. I've written quite a bit, but I just want to get this figured out so I know which step to take next. Thanks ladies!! :hugs:

Hard to say. It does not sound like it's an issue of him still being hungry and you being out of milk since he gets squirted when he pulls away. So I would lean toward two possibilities. One is that it is gas- does burping him seem to help at all? Try giving him a 5 minute rest from the breast while you wind him and see if that helps. The second thing is that the nurse might be right- he might be full. But he may want the comfort of sucking which is why he eagerly takes to the nipple again but then gets frustrated because really, he knows he's full and does not want more food. If you already use a passy- try giving him that. If you don't maybe try letting him suck on your finger or try to comfort him in some other way. Or, if he has already emptied a breast, you could offer him that one and he'd be able to suck and not get as much milk (not sure you want to do this one though as it will signal your body to make even more milk). Good luck!

sounds rather silly to me :(

for me it sounds like you have a quick let down, especially 'cos you say when he pulls of the nipple milk is all over him and you.

that might disturb him feeding more in the evenings 'cos he is more tired.

he will pull off, 'cos the milk flow is too much for him, starts to cry 'cos he is still hungry.
try to feed him in a more upright position, so milk can go down more easily.

we had quite a problem (also could not feed in public, 'cos LO was crying and fuzzing around on the breast ) with it in the beginning too, but it will settle down :hi:

It sounds very similar to tghe problems we've been having with Seth and he has oral thrush... is Jaedan's tongue covered in a white coating? Its supposed to disappear about an hour after a feed, and if it doesn't then it's thrush (apparently!).

If it is you might want to get to you HV/docs asap... they can give you some drops for his mouth and some cream for your nipples. I think you can get it in your boobs and keep passing it backwards and forwards between the two of you, so it's definately best to nip it in the bud if thats what it is.

Hope you get it sorted :)
