George was born by c-section on 18th Jan. We had lots of breastfeeding problems and he lost a lot of weight, and today we started on formula as I was just too worried about him to carry on exclusively with bf. But in his wet nappies he still has orangey patches, which I was told were some kind of crystals and normal in first couple of days. Obviously, this is now day 5... is this still normal? Is it because he didn't feed well to start with?

My oldest had them. We were told they should be gone by 2 weeks of age and if they aren't by then to get her seen as they can be a sign of dehydration. I think at 5 days old your still ok and they are still considered normal.

It can well be a sign of dehydration…you are still under the care of your mw until 28 days postnatally so I would be inclined to ring her and ask her as no one here can give you accurate information on the health of your baby :hugs: just give her a call she won't mind you asking q's or even popping in to check the nappy, it is what they are there for :hugs:

Hiya, my baby had these still after week as we were having issues with bf. He ended up losing over 10 per cent of his body weight and was very dehydrated. I would definitely mention it to your MW. Although I do have to say after a night in hospital and a mixture of expressed bm and formula (so much better for me knowing that he was actually getting milk), these disappeared within hours. Easily fixed.
