Breastfeeding hasn't always felt easy and natural to me - we had to really work at it in the beginning, and a few times I've really felt I was failing and wanted to quit. Every time we push through an obstacle and keep going I'm really happy, but nothing tops tonight.
Today Darwin was really unhappy, feverish, rubbing his face constantly and drooling huge pools all over everything. Teething seems to be absolute hell for the poor little guy and all day I've been so frustrated, wishing there was more I could do. I gave him Tylenol, put numbing gel on his gums, tried every type of teether/soother/gum massager (we literally have every kind carried by every store in town) and it just got worse all day long.
Tonight it all crescendoed in a horrible screaming fit - he had gone to sleep, but woke up in such pain he was shrieking. All my dear hubby could do was desperately try to soothe him with words and touch, but it didn't work. What calmed him down was breastfeeding. I just knew what he needed and it was so wonderful to be able to give him that comfort. He'd just eaten, so I knew the cries weren't from hunger, he just seemed to need to feel safe and close (and soothe his sore gums with the best pacifier there is), and enjoyed a snack in the process. He's a booby baby for sure, and tonight I'm SO so happy I can say that.
