Which do people use?

I've noticed that Earl is a lot less blocked up if I make his milk up to the ML mark rather than the oz mark. I know there's only a miniscule difference but it seems to work.

Is this a placebo or does anyone else find the same thing? Earl is on SMA Gold btw and the instructions say to use 1 scoop per 30ml/1oz.

It shouldn't make any difference tbh. If he's getting blocked up, what about offering some cooled boiled water between feeds (if you haven't already)

I make it up to the ml line as well. Brady is on SMA and I give him 1-2 oz of water through the day to help him poo, he just has a few mouthfulls here and there coz he hates it

i fill up to the ml dont know why allways have lol!! xxx

It's not that he gets badly blocked up, he's just less so lol (If that makes any sense). I also offer him water (I always have a bottle of water fresh every day ready and waiting. Earl quite likes it but it's rare he'll take more than a couple of mouthfuls.

It must just be a placebo.....it's just I've noticed a lot of people saying that SMA can cause constipation and I wondered whether or not this was an issue? Just a thought.

I've heard this now as well, the HV and MW both said it to me which annoys me because when I asked about formula when I was pregnant they said that all the brands were the same! Dont know about you but I really hate the lack of support and information for formula feeding, I know they want to try and encourage breast feeding but that doesn't mean they should ignore everyone else!

Anyway, rant over :) I've also seen a lot of people on another forum that say that SMA is the best one they've tried, never had any problems and that Aptamil gave their LO's trouble (supposedly the Rolls Royce of formula). Every baby is different, I changed Brady to Aptamil last week because he kept being so sick but it made no difference to the sick or the poo lol! I've changed back now and it actually seems to be the Infacol that was making him sick as he hasn't had any for 2 days now and is fine.

Snap on the feelings of lack of support. I said from day one that I didn't want to BF (lots of reasons) and even when I was 8cm dilated in the birthing pool the MW was trying to convert me.....seriously if I hadn't been totally incapacitated by pain I would have lamped her!! lol I must admit that my HV was lovely and totally respected my decision to FF, and she gave me all the literature and even told me a few tricks for sterilising etc which have come in handy - told me not to bother with the microwave/electric ones and stick to Milton lol. But since then, I've pretty much had to learn on the hoof. I picked SMA because I was an SMA baby and after asking my MIL, it turns out so was hubby so it seemed logical. I had always assumed that they were all pretty much the same (after all they all do the same job!) but now I keep hearing that different formulas do different things for different babies and I think I've been very lucky that Earl and SMA get on! lol Sorry to hear that Infacol isn't agreeing with Brady. We've got Earl on it but I've noticed that it's becoming less effective as time goes on - I'm having to give him 2 droppers rather than 1 overnight now which I didn't have to do before. We're going to try him on gripe water once we've got to 1 month and run low on infacol - perhaps you could do the same?

Thanks for the responses xx

I have always used ml as this was the measurements used for my EBM by SCBU and MWs in hospital. I too had probs with Imi pooing while on SMA but had no probs at all since being on Aptimal :)

First of all, I always go to ml but I don't know why, its just what we did from the start, no reason behind it!

Also, I agree with the lack of support, well defo pre-birth. At first I wanted to BF but there was no back-up info or recommendations for FF. I was planning to BF then combi then FF when I returned to work. In hospital I was struggling to BF so I asked for some ready made milk and the MW said 'you are aware I will have to document this in your notes' like I was getting a black mark or something! I'm sure someone said that MW's aren't trained on FF anymore so they can't offer advice on it but surely they should be trained on both?!? I know my local hospitals are proud that they promote 'breast is best', they say they don't discourage FF but at the same time you get no info on it, so it's as good as in my eyes! My HV is lovely tho and supports it, well supports me and so that is good!

Lastly, we gave Chloe infacol and she was really sick with it too, we have been fine since we took her off it again and just give her a serious winding at night. We are lucky as she is not too windy but does have to odd windy / grumpy day which is why we got it but there is just no point when it brings eveything back up!
