I have been having contractions for 4 days without dilating (they said it looks like 'irritable uterus') and had a shot of pethidine in hospital as well as co-codamol daily for the pain. Ive been discharged as feel more comfortable at home and nothing was happening anyway but i can only really take paracetamol at home and of course it does nothing. I have some tramadol here has anyone taken this in pregnancy before? i just want to be able to sleep and have some pain relief :( :(

Hi Leafy,

Firstly, sorry you are having such a painful time. I suffer from an irritable uterus too so can understand totally how you feel. I know nothing about Tramadol and would strongly suggest you do not take this and go back to your doctors and request a stronger pain relief for use at home. I agree that rarely does paracetemol work for me too. I was prescribed co-codamol and co-dydramol on a different occasion but these of course cannot be used continuously due to other side effects.

You can ask your doctors for something safe to take to help you get back into a sleepmpattern as a short term measure.

I have found that there is no way round having to take other measure in order not to irritate my uterus and the best is rest and as much of it as you can do! I regularly have strong painful contractions that send me into a spiral of worry, particularly as i have a 2 year old i am running round after too. Have you tried relaxing warm baths, sounds silly but i find does help and sit down and rest even just for a few mins at a time as often as you can. It all adds up and can save you a lot of pain.

I hope you find something that works but get onto the doctors and say you need more help.

Best wishes
mpg:hugs:

Thanks for replying, it's just awful isnt it?! I've got a section booked at 39 weeks because the baby is breech and even though its only just under 3 weeks away it feels like a lifetime with this constant pain!!! Yes baths help i wish i could stay in there all day lol as soon as i get out it's back! It seems to be worse in the evening and lying down in bed but all i wana do is sleep it off. xxxx

Hi leafy,

It is awful and you cant help but worry. The lack of sleep just exacerbates everything so dont be afraid to demand some help with that. Doctors are notoriously cautious about handing out sleep medication particularly in latter stages as this is when sleep patterns tend to get disrupted anyway in a natural pattern to get us ready for having no sleep when the baby arrives. But you are obviously suffering and have other reasons to require this rest.

Just dont leave until you have the help you need!!

The next three weeks will suddenly just fly by, promise!

Good luck, keep us posted and try hot milk too, sometimes works for me when i am desperate, even if it just jphelps get me to sleep for a while!!!

Sorry i cant be more help to you tonight but hooe you get some rest x

It is awful to have an "irritable uterus". I started taking Procardia today to get my uterus to calm down. It does feel like everytime I move or the baby moves I get contractions and they hurt. Makes the thought of me going through 45 more days of this dreadful.

BIG HUGS!!! Hope you get some relief soon.
