Hi my hubby is thinking about asking for some parental leave, just wondered if anyone had taken any and how it works?

Thanks :flower:

I take parental leave at my work. Each company has their own policy, but you are entitled to up to 13 weeks (I think) a year unpaid per child under 5yrs (under 18yrs is disabled). My company states that I have to give at least 4 weeks notice (unless it is an emergency) and that I must take the parental leave in blocks of 1 week.
My husbands old work was slightly different and they allowed him to take the odd single days off as parental leave (unpaid) so long as it didn't affect the running of the company.

Not sure if that helps or not.... Maybe best check with his employer :flow:

Maternity leave can now be split between parents, and so both can take SML and receive SMP (at different times). The only proviso being that the other party needs to be going back to work.

I.e. A woman could take off 8 months instead of the full amount, receive her SMP, then return to work, and her partner could then take the remaining paid month of SMP and unpaid three months leave.

There is no limit to what each can take within the year so the man could take all or some leave and vice versa, just the other party goes back to work. Its called additional paternity leave.

I have just read that it is restricted to 6 months.

Thank you going crazy thats what we are thinking about doing the 18 weeks unpaid leave you get for a child under 5-max 4 weeks per year. taking 4 blocks of 1 week ayear, Hubby is going to ask his work today.

Thank you all.
