Yes, why do you want to stay away from Metformin? If you have PCOS, shouldn't you be on Met all the time, regardless of if you're TTC or not? It does more than just make you more fertile, it actually helps to regulate a lot of issues in women with PCOS, decreasing our risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, depression, etc, etc, etc. I don't see why you wouldn't want to take it all the time. It's totally safe, based on a naturally occurring herb, and has been thoroughly vetted over decades of research. It's not a fertility medication, it's a medication for PCOS in general.
Both during the fertile years and after menopause, PCOS affects several systems of the body including insulin response; melatonin, serotonin, and dopamine production and processing; sleep cycles; ghrelin and leptin response (hunger signaling); hormone balance and receptor functionality; digestive flora balance; vitamin absorption (we have a hard time absorbing b vitamins and folate); inositol production and uptake; and much more. If you haven't really read up on what PCOS is, you should grab a book or two. It's a bigger health issue that OB's care to address.
You may also want to look into supplementing with myo-inositol (standard inositol) and d-chiro-inositol. Recent research indicated much of PCOS may be tied into our bodies' inability to process and utilize these correctly. I take both daily along with my Metformin and have noticed a major difference in how I feel and how well I sleep. The other important one for women with PCOS is to take the METHYLATED forms of b6, b12, and folate. If you need info on where to get those, feel free to PM me.
