Hey everyone.

So i'm 30 with PCOS, had it since late teens. The symptoms come and go but lately i'm in one of my bad stages. Haven't had a period for a couple of months now.... not PG

I'm completely unmedicated when it comes to the PCOS and prefer to do things naturally. I'm trying to lose weight in hope that it will help regulate my cycle.

I just wondered, does anyone know of anything natural I could try to help regulate my hormones? Vitamins etc?

didn't want to read and run, i have PCO's too. I was told by my Dr to keep the weight off my middle as that would stop me ovulating. I was also told to take folic acid tablets and generally keep healthy.

Dont know if that helps! x

Thanks hun, that's what i'm trying to do, however my weight automatically goes straight on my stomach lol.
I've ordered some pre conception vitamins, just the cheapest ones I could find. Some of them are £30 a month. We'll see if the cheap ones help first :)

Well I started my ovulation testing again today, just interested in what's going on with my body.

No ovulation but had a negative FSH test which is good news.

Hi Clarina,

I have PCOS as well and have accupuncture and go to a fertility nutritionist.

The nutritionist told me to take mum 2 be vitamins and sucrogurad (for the sugar cravings), I am also taking milk thistle which helps clear out the excess estrogen from the liver and I was taking Agnus Castus but that didn't seem to do anything for me so I stopped. The nutritionist also makes me up some herbs every now and then.

Looks like my cycle will be 40 days this month so I am pretty happy with the way things are going so far.

I am also doing a low gi way of eating, although was doing some reading this weekend and think I really need to cut more carbs out to get rid of the PCOS, I am pretty possitive that I can get rid of it though naturally.

Thanks Bea. Some great info :D I can't afford a nutritionist but i'll definitely do some research on those herbs.

I'm a carb fiend, I find it really hard to go without. I'm gonna concentrate on getting the lbs off first and see what that does for my cycle.

Thanks so much :)

I wish I could get rid of PCOS naturally, I have been on Metformin for years and thats the only thing that works for me in conjunction to a low carb diet. It seems though once I lose the weight I want to, if I continue on Metformin, it allows me to maintain my weight even if I sneak a few more carbs into my diet.
The supplaments I take for PCOS is Milk thistle, pre natal, b-12 prescription pill, fish oil, and green tea extract.

heya hun

i have pcos too and am finding it really difficult to even start loosing weight. i want a baby more than anything but i seem to have a weird mental block about loosing weight atm.

have you been to a fertility specialist? mine refered me to a nutritionist and she was lovely and really helpful, she told me lots more about pcos than my fs ever did.

i had a one day bleed last month and this was my first ever bleed for 2-3 years. i've started eatting 3 meals a day and tried to me abit more balanced for now to get me into gear abit before loosing weight lol. i never usually eat 3 meals and it obviously did something :)

i've been trying to cut down the carbs as i am a total carb junkie. my sl haas recently had ivf and her consultatnt told her that nothing is better than taking pregnancy vits even when trying to make sure your body has everything it needs to more it easier.

i tried soy and i think if i had any proper periods it would have worked alot better, in the 3 goes i gave it i got plenty of ov pains but no ov as far as i know, i've also taken vit d as high doeses are supposed to be good for pcos, and vit b.

atm i need to get it into my head that nothing is going to happen until i loose some weight - the doctors won't help me with anything, opk's don't work aas i always get a feighnt line but nothing more or less. i had a misscariage about a yr and a half ago and most of the pregnancy tests didn;t come out either.

my next steps are to loose weight and invest in a duo fertility monitor x

My doctor also put me on phentermine (not covered by insurance and its 30$ a month). With that, metformin and Diet, I lost 7 pounds in a month doing nothing athletic because I broke my tailbone and really couldn't move. I just went back on it and am looking forward to see how exercise will help with the prescriptions and vitamins

I have SO much weight to lose, over 100lbs, so I know it will improve things somewhat. Last time I lost 1 stone I got my first period in ages and it was like it must have been storing it up, it was so bad!!! I couldn't move outta bed for several days because of the cramps, I just slept.

wantanerd, I have similar probs with moving around due to back problems, making it so much harder to lose weight. I'm using myfitnesspal.com and have lost 7lbs in 3 weeks so far. It's a start :)

I recently saw the nurse regarding my diet and she told me the best thing is a low gi diet, apparently too many carbs can cause the symptoms of pcos to be worse. She also suggested a half an hour walk per day, that way you get some exercise each day.

wannabeamummyb - I totally agree with you. The best thing you can do for PCOS is exercise I have found lots of research saying the best exercise you can do is weight training and building up muscles. Most of the websites I have looked at will say something like this:
"Women with PCOS have a disrupted glucose/insulin system. Muscles stabilize glucose/insulin systems, making it easier to eat fewer calories, leading to better glucose levels, and muscles use more calories at rest. That means if you build a muscle, it helps you lose weight round the clock, not just while you're building it"

clarina - If you’re not really up for the gym how about joining yoga or a Pilates class and preferably paying up front because then you feel you have to go.

Maybe we should start an exercise thread like the diet ones and you have to say what your exercise goal is and what you have done that week to achieve it. I love exercise when I am into it but then I get lazy and stop going.

Butterfly - You should try Sucroguard, it is something my nutritionist recommended (got it off Amazon) and it helps with the cravings. I used to be such a sugar and carb addict but it has totally helped me I would definitely recommend it.

You may consider Metformin, the side effects suck but it really does help with the weight loss. I think with metformin I have lost a combined total of 100lbs over the years but then let myself gain some of the weight back. After I lose weight with the metformin, if I stay on it, watch what I eat most of the time and exercise, I maintain.

i'd love to try metformin but my fs refuses to prescribe it to anyone pfft

Did they say why they refuse to give it to anyone?

not really his words were it's not fashionable anymore to give it to pcos sufferers and he doesn't belive it'd make a difference :nope:

my gp can;t do anything about it and it'd take months to be refered so i'll have to stick to a low gi diet i;d imagine

The low gi diet will help anyway! His attitude makes me made though - not fashionable???!!!!

I can tell you for a fact Metformin totally helps. Next time you see him, print out the studies they have done which shows not only it helps with pcos, it has been shown to help prevent miscarriage if you take it the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Fight with your doctor to get what you want. Sometimes you have to be firm, but he should listen. If not, it may be worth switching.

You already have started - cutting out white bread/pasta/rice is a start, there is some really great website that will help, eg https://www.diabetes.org.uk/Guide-to-diabetes/Food_and_recipes/The-Glycaemic-Index/ i know its the diabetes org site but it has some really useful info and receipes
