Anyone have experience with seeing a peds surgeon? I don't know what to expect.
History: I noticed my LO had a lump about 2 inches above her belly button (but below her rib cage). It's raised and squishy, but if you press through it, there is a very hard/solid pea-sized lump. On and off fevers for the past month as well. I took her to see a dr., which said it could be a lipoma (I looked it up, it's NOT a lipoma), but referred her to a dermatologist. A CBC was taken, all was normal. At this point, she's had loose stools for the past 6 days.
The dermatologist said it's not a hernia, or a lipoma (I was right!). But suggested she gets seen by a pediatric surgeon. At that point they can do additional testing (ultrasounds/echo/xray/biospy).
I'm scared to death of them cutting my LO's stomach open.

Stupid question, but they image/run tests before doing anything right??? Her drs and dermatologist don't know if it's in/on muscle or organs.

My first thought was hernia as they are pretty common. Is it getting bigger? When is your appointment? We have quite a bit to do with a ped neurologist and I was amazed at how good he was compared to other peds we'd seen. My point is I'm sure they will be able to reassure you. Would imagine they would ultrasound it first though. Hugs hunny! Xx

oh yeah course they will prob scan and maybe xray and even to be sure might do a mri scan but thats only going on what ive had done they wont go in and have a look as it could be nothing xx

I was hoping it was a simple hernia, but the drs. and dermatologist are conviced it is not. Just looking at it, it does look like a hernia... but when you push through the skin, there is a very hard nodule in there.
They want to see her within 72 hrs... not sure how the process works. Her referral won't be posted for the next 48 business hours, but I'll try to give them a call tomorrow in the hopes it has showed up. It hasn't gotten any bigger, I'm guessing that's a good thing.

Yeh the fact that it's not growing is a good thing. My friends baby girl had a hernia that looked like an awful lump but was completely harmless. Keep phoning and pestering the secretarys until you get your appointment. Where are you? Have you got a good consultant? X

:hugs:

The surgeons were really good when LO had his op and they normally see you first and discuss everything with you, they wont just give you an app and then operate there and then or anything so dont worry about that, you will have plenty of chance to ask any questions and they wont operate unless they are certain of what they are doing hun.

Ellie had a hernia and it was hard as there was a small blockage so it might just be a simple hernia so dont stress about it til you know and if you call tomorrow they can prob tell you when the appointment is for, but if you are ever worried or baby gets unwell head to the dr x

I'm in the US. Our particular insurance structure is I have to wait till the referral is booked in their system. Her primary pediatric physican is great, just clueless as to what it is. And of course, as soon as we left the dermatologist's office, she had a mild fever (lowere then the other ones) with a runny nose :dohh:
I'm hoping she didn't swallow something, but I'm assuming you wouldn't be able to palpate an object that was swallowed?
I'm clutching at straws... so hopefully we'll get some imaging done to see what's there. I guess I'm just a little surprised she's gone from her normal dr., to a dermatologist, and now to a surgeon? I figured radiologist would have been the next step. But maybe it can all be taken care of with a surgeon?
Like I said, I have no idea what's going on. I'll try to call our appointment line tomorrow to see if the referral posted early, if not, it'll be Monday.

Hello, I know its been some time but I was wondering what the outcome of this was. My son seems to have something similar and I am waiting on a consultation appointment with the local children's hospital.

Thanks,
