My 15 month old has been on amoxicillin since Friday. Yesterday he had a rash on his chest which I put down to the heat but this morning it's over his face aswell. Could it be an allergy?

My mum is allergic to penicillin and said she gets a rash.

Typical it's Sunday and the doctors are closed

my five year old found he was allergic to amoxicillin when he was three. He had a red rash on the soles of his feet thay didnt blanch. We rushed him to hospital to find it was an allergic reaction to his antibiotics. They prescribed some antihistimines for him and he was fine. He can take other penicillin products just not amoxicillin. What does your child need penicillin for? can you call 1111 (I think it is) and ask for some advice on wether to stop penicillin and request a different type if yoir son needs it. My guess is that if he is allergic they will have to switch his antibiotics xx

Well I called NHS direct and she advised me to take him to the walk in centre.

The nurse there thinks it is an allergic reaction as it came on about 24 hours after his first dose. She's given him some aqueous cream but told me he no longer needs antibiotics as his throat is clear, which I though was a bit strange.

I didn't think to ask at the time but I have some child's piriton in the cupboard, will it be ok to give him this?

Louis is allergic to penicillin. He came out in a terrible rash followed by hives and his temperature shot up. He was in hospital overnight and switched to erythromycin antibiotic which he is always prescribed now. He was prescribed piriton for the hives and to help him get some rest.

My middle son is allergic to pencillin, we only found out when he was nearly 4 as he had never had any antibiotics before that. He had a blotchy rash from head to toe, cold symptoms, red eyes and a high temperature so bad we thought it was measles even though he had his MMR, but found it was pencillin allergy we were surprised as nobody in either side of the family has it. Xx

being allergic to one form of penecillin doesnt mean your baby will be allergic to all forms. My son is allergic to amoxicillin but can take other kinds of penicillins.

Have to checked the piriton bottle to see if he is old enough for a dose? Ive never given it to a baby that young before. In my 3 year old it gave him tummy ache on a small dose. I would say continue with the cream for another day and if its not fading then call the doctor to ask about piriton.

Im glad your little man is feeling better with his throat :) xx

I am allergic to all of the "cillin" drugs, and get the exact rash you describe. It's not too bad, but my Dr has prescribed other antibiotics instead when I've needed them. Just make sure to always let your health care provider know, because a cillin allergy can worsen over time and become serious.

Thanks everyone!

The rash is still there this morning but seems better. The piriton I have is from 1 year but he's only allowed 2 2.5ml doses in 24 hours. He had a half a spoon last night

Xx

I'm severely allergic to the penicillin antibiotics. I was given it as a kid and apparently I got hives and stopped breathing. But it seems to run in my family as my mom also has that allergy and so do my sisters.
But there are plenty other antibiotics to give other then penicillin, they just might be a bit pricier if you hafta pay for them.
