People selling their WIC formula

Makes my blood boil!

For those of you who don't know what WIC is, it's a government-funded program that gives vouchers for formula to low-income moms and other things like food vouchers and free breast pumps for breastfeeding moms.

Anyways, there's someone on my Facebook trying to sell their 30 cans of formula they received through WIC for $12 per can. Yup, that's our tax moneys! GRR!!

That makes me crazy. I will never understand people who will take food intended for the needy and use it to make a profit. It makes me sick.

I imagine the baby is either breastfed, and the mother has low income so selling her cans for extra money, or buy like target brand which is 1/3 of the cost and selling the name brand for profit. Shitty though!

I really hope so! Its very sad to think of a person letting their baby go hungry so they could make money off their baby's food.

Some times and I hope this is the case.
A baby gets changed to a different kind of formula and mom has some left over
SHe is supposed to return it to the WIC office.
SOme people dont pay attention or read their contract
I would like to beleive she just doesnt realize what she is doing.
I want to believe most people are good
I know its not always like that
But I would like to beleive

You should report her! I am on WIC, but not needing formula as I'm breastfeeding. It's upsetting that people do this stuff. My mom works at a church and they give away formula, too. She says they catch women selling it, too. They have to be super careful now, which is a shame.

I know someone that does this with the UK version. They're just coupons rather than actual tins but they sell the coupons go and buy the formula then moan they can't afford the tubs. Makes no sense to me.

Gosh, there are much worse things in life! If the baby wasn't breast feeding well, the baby would have needed the formula anyway. I'm not bothered by someone trying to make a few extra dollars to meet their baby's needs. Living on welfare is hard! As a high bracket taxpayer, I do not mind at all.

(if she was fraudulently claiming WIC though, that would wind me up for some reason though. Illogical, I know )

In uk the voucher has a dual purpose, formula, cows milk or veg. It seems weird they are only for formula in America? seems like it could be easily ripped off by mums not formula feeding. I would assume she was feeding her baby. I hope so anyway.

I dont blame the mum to be honest (unless shes buying drugs or something),maybe she is really bad off and needs money. I hear the benefits in America arnt good. Here they take so much off families sometimes they turn to crime and selling what they have. People can be very resentful towards families who are struggling, maybe because they are to in a different way but its not each others fault.

Don't report her. It's very annoying, but not a crime enough to go through the anguish of being reported. Times are hard. There's scandals in the news with MPs claiming for furnishing their second homes and all sorts so there's sneaky people doing much worse than her with our taxes.

We are on WIC & we had leftover formula (my son had to switch) and we were basically told that if we tried to sell it, we would be in a buttload of trouble. My husband is military so I wouldnt wanna sell it & risk getting us all in trouble :/ Although any extra money sure would be nice!

Sadly baby formula is one of the #1 stolen items in stores - often by people who don't even have a baby but will sell it at half price.

This is why I wouldn't commit it myself, if I were breastfeeding I would not apply for the vouchers and feel happy going through life not doing wrong. However I'm also saying that I wouldn't report her for doing it, because there's something a little cruel in that too since I don't get quite how her selling WIC formula directly effects the benefits you personally get?

WIC is a program specifically for low incomes (Women, infants, and children) who are at nutritional risk (and the application requires a health evaluation by a physician to say yes, they are at risk of nutritional deficiencies if they don't get this extra food).

It's not like a broadly-applied benefit for all women.
