People selling their WIC formula

We really don't know everyone's circumstances - they may be doing it because they are schemers or because they really are hard up and need the extra cash badly. Who knows? Either way, it isn't right. As far as reporting it, go with your gut, but ask yourself why it matters to you.

I doubt her baby is going hungry.

WIC is a program specifically for low incomes (Women, infants, and children) who are at nutritional risk (and the application requires a health evaluation by a physician to say yes, they are at risk of nutritional deficiencies if they don't get this extra food).

It's not like a broadly-applied benefit for all women.

Okay, I do understand what you say about it being a project they can't afford to dole out to just any body who doesn't really need it and also think she shouldn't be doing that.

I still don't report people any way. But you are right about her being outrageous and although I wouldn't report her nor urge others to do so I do not condone her selfish actions.

Report her.
She signed a contract when she joined stating that any unused formula would be turned into the WIC office.
I know this because I was on WIC with my older three

Don't report her. It's very annoying, but not a crime enough to go through the anguish of being reported. Times are hard. There's scandals in the news with MPs claiming for furnishing their second homes and all sorts so there's sneaky people doing much worse than her with our taxes.

But it really is no different than welfare fraud - those who truly need help from WIC are screwed when the masses do this (keep in mind, this is a US program and there are a lot LESS social services/assistance for these women than there are for you in the UK).

This is why I wouldn't commit it myself, if I were breastfeeding I would not apply for the vouchers and feel happy going through life not doing wrong. However I'm also saying that I wouldn't report her for doing it, because there's something a little cruel in that too since I don't get quite how her selling WIC formula directly effects the benefits you personally get?

When I was pregnant I got milk tokens they are called to buy formula , milk or veg. I bought tins of formula. I never used them as I breastfed and tried to give them away but had no friend that had babies. I never thought to sell it though but if someone wanted to buy I would have sold it to them, wouldnt have thought that was fraud though. Just unused formula I had stocked up. I ended up binning it. It went out of date sitting there and my baby was being fed. I used the tokens after for milk for myself and veg.

It's fraud on behalf of my tax paying dollar and that's why it bothers me. It's just like selling food stamps.

I, myself, benefit from WIC. I get vouchers for certain food items every month and a free hospital-grade electric breast pump.

It's basically the same as someone using their food vouchers to buy eggs, milk, cheese, bread, etc. and then taking it back to the store and returning the items for cash. Fortunately, they have a system to counter this sort of fraud, but it's still the same concept - selling your government-funded food for $$$. I don't care what their circumstances are - it's wrong both legally and morally.

Almost everybody that I know that has gotten WIC and had a formula fed baby they got WAY more formula than they needed each month. So when their baby turned a year they had tons of unopened cans leftover. Thankfully most of my friends gave it away to people who needed it but I do know a few that sold it..and that was what they were selling, not the food their baby actually needed.

People misusing these government programs irks me to no end. They are getting free assistance to help raise their kids, and they have to abuse it. Yes, I know that its a very hard economic time for everyone, but the fact that I have to pay tax dollars to support this type of scheming drives me nuts!

My point is that people break the law every day, us included. Running red lights, speeding, drawing an unemployment check while not actually seeking work, etc. Is it just that this person is making a buck off of it that seems so unfair? That's all I'm getting at - I'm not defending it at all. I even said in my original post that it isn't right. People screw the government/law every day.

It irks me, too, but who are we to throw stones?

I'm not saying they should get away with it. Not at all. I'm saying if we are gonna get all ticked at someone else breaking the law, then we ought to rein in our own law breaking.

I wouldnt report her, I would't even worry abut it. yes, its tax money, but its probably like a few cents out of tax money u paid going to her. Its hard times, maybe the formula isnt good and wic wont help her with other formula so its the only way she has enought to feed her child who cant eat that formula? maybe she had left over formula because her child never ate that much and she combi fed. Theres a milion reasons, and to be honest, though she is selling it. its none of ur bussiness, unless her child is being starved which, probably isn't the case either.

The problem is that WIC is only granted a certain amount of money per region per period. More people than ever are having to turn to WIC to feed their babies because of the economy. The funding can't keep up with the increase. So while she isn't starving her baby, she could very well be taking formula from a baby who needed it but wouldn't get it because of a lack of funds. That's the reason you have to sign the contract to return unused formula.

So in addition to be morally wrong and quite frankly stealing from the taxpayer, she's also potentially depriving another baby of food. I'd report her in a second and give her a piece of my mind. I can't imagine being that selfish.

Where I am from, you cannot return unused formula (it was not WIC btw) but the food bank will happily accept it. It is their #1 needed food.

The wic program give you around 10 small cans a month the first 6 months of life, and mother veggies and milk for PP. After 6 months I think it goes down to like 6 or 7 cans of formula a month, plus a couple boxes of rice cereal and alot of gerber baby food jars.

Hoestly the goverment might say this, or wic themselfs.. But they wont let a baby starve, so really what this mother is doing is her bussiness, only her bussiness.

I'm not sure where your from, but that's not the case. My state ran out of funding to feed the low income elderly. So the elderly had to turn to churches and private non-profits for food, and some of them just went without. It's extremely sad, but it's true. Funds aren't unlimited.

It's not just 'her business' if she's committing a crime and pulling food out of other baby's mouths.

It's WIC's business too. WIC would not approve seeing as the individual is breaking a signed contract.

and thats why they tell you to bring back the unused forumla to them
Personaly when i was in the WIC program I never got enough to get us thru a month. I had to buy some out of my own pocket.
I was thankful for what I had though.
I did hear women sitting in the waiting room complaining about how they didnt get enough and how WIC SHOULD give more.
I think the WIC program is GREAT!!! It helps so many people and I dont judge people who are on it.

In another one of my forums a few months ago A woman started a thred about how much money WIC puts out in formula every month and how women who couldent afford to ff should be made to bf and that there is no reason any woman cant do it because she personaly worked an 80 hour work week and ebfd untill her lo was 18 mos old.
She also went so far as to say that no one ever REALLY has problems bfing unless you have had a mastectomy or something and in that case you just shouldent have children because your being selfish, and that saying you have a supply issue is a bad excuse for laziness and not wanting to put fwd the effort.
ANd it blew up into a BF vs FF event and then that event met the Govt assistance vs non govt assistance event.
The reason I mentioned that is to bring me to my next point
There are ALOT of people out there who abuse the system badly.
Because of them any one needing assistance tends to be judged.
I have experienced it myself.
I suddently became a single mom and had to go into the system.
I was in the grocery storeone day with my kids who were still little.
A woman behind me had been talking to me and my kids and we all just had a nice conversation. the cashier rung me up an I pulled out my EBT (food stamp card) to pay for my stuff and the womans demeanor changed fast
she even went so far as to ask me if they all had the same father.
This was INCREADIBLY insulting

The point is, people like this woman is what gives every one who needs help a bad name. People liike that are the reason people argue over who deserves help and should have children or not.
the whole thing has remindind me of a girl I used to know who had two toddlers.
she was on food stamps and welfare she got her hair and nails done every month (or more could have been) She would go every month to a different church to get help with her electric bill. Most of the time the church will take care of the over due to keep you from getting cut off and then leave the current charges.
She went to one church and took the letter and bill. One woman took her bill to another room while another woman packed a box of food and such for her.
The other woman came back out and told her that she went ahead and paid the whole balance.
Well the girl actually got mad that the woman paid it for her instead of giving her the money like other churches because she could have paid the over due and then used the extra for gas and pampers.
I just wanted to scream!
Again my point is, its people who do this kind of thing that makes the rest of us who end up in a bad situation look bad too.

People in the UK do it too - there is loads of Neocate on ebay which was presumably obtained through our free prescription service. Fume!

People are just greedy. I think alot of women don't realize that WIC is not there to support your child, its there to help and take care of some of the expenses, not all of them. They don't give enough to feed a fully formula fed baby, but they sure as in hell do cut MOST expenses down. I mean seriously, women can go to target, get the UP and UP brand HUGE l(like 40oz) can of powder for 20.00.

WIC really is a great program. It's just so disappointing that someone would take advantage of it.

What she's doing is wrong. As a taxpayer, I see that she's abusing the system and she's the perfect example of someone giving the program a bad name. She's abusing a system funded by the taxpayers, so it's not just her business but ours as well.

Turn her in. :growlmad:
