Is pilates any good for actually losing weight or just for toning?

Went to my first class yesterday and really enjoyed it- even though I wasn't very good at it :haha:
At the time I didn't have that feeling of having had a really good workout but definately feeling it today
For those that do it regularly, is once a week enough or should I be looking at a couple of times a week? I can't really afford to go to a class more than once a week so might look into getting a dvd for home.

I think from what I have read, Pilates is very good for building strength but in terms of fat burn I'm not so sure.

Pilates builds a strong muscular core and lots of lean muscle. Lean muscle mass helps burn fat. So yes, it does help with weight loss. But weight loss is about calories in vs calories out, so I would suggest doing pilates 2-3 times a week (get a dvd, for sure - the classes are expensive) and cardio 2-3 times a week. And watch your diet.
That should give you some results.
I loved the posture and stretching I got from pilates, as well - bonus, I think! :)

hi i try to do pilates 2-3 times a week but i also try to do some cardio as well.i feel its def making a change in my tummy area.
i would get dvds or a game for wii(if u have it)

i honestly believe its important to do exercise that u enjoy and that way u will keep doing it

Thanks ladies, think I'll look for a dvd as at £5 a go the classes are very expensive! Any recommendations?
It definately did something as I was quite sore the day after and my lower abdomen is still sl sore today 4 days later  Hope it's better for my second attempt on sunday!

I have had good results with several different dvds by Moira Stott (Stott Pilates) and Mari Winsor.
