Did anyone do "Placenta Encapsulation"? I've heard about it before because celebrities have done it. Tonight, I came across an article on a parenting website that said consuming the placenta in capsule form helps reduce post partum depression and promote healing. I am prone to depression anyway, and, I am seriously considering doing this. I've mentioned it to some people out of curiosity and I just get reactions saying how "gross" it sounds.

Did anyone here have their placenta encapsulated? Why or why not? Did you notice any benefits?

(I'm not sure if this is exactly the right place to post this. Sorry if I chose the wrong board!)

I am having mine encapsulated for the same reason as you, there's lots of evidence that the placenta has loads of hormones that are beneficial in the post natal period. I don't think I could handle it raw or anything but dried and put into capsules so all I have to do us swallow a couple of capsules sounds doable! X

This is something I plan on doing. My friend had her baby at the end of September and I mentioned placental encapsulation to her - she went ahead and had it done, she can't recommend it enough :)

It makes me sad to think that the placenta has nourished the baby for 9 months and then is just disregarded as something icky at the end. xx

I was looking into this a while back as I suffered with very low iron postnatally and probably had PND too but never went to get help. But I've given up on the idea after reading somewhere that the hormones that cause PGP/SPD can remain in the capsules too and therefore slow down recovery of PGP/SPD.
I don't want to risk being in pain for any longer than necessary so I'm not doing it anymore.

I found this website really useful though for info https://placentanetwork.com/ and you can search for people local to you who will do the capsules for you

Im in Ireland and Im having It done. I decided very early on it was something id like to try. There are so many potential benefits I cant see why not! And even if its just a placebo effect, so what! we still get the benefits! :happydance:

edit: I see you are only 14 weeks along, Il come back and tell you how I got on with them :flower:

Ppd and learning disabilities have been directly linked by the WHO to low iron. You don't need to consume a placenta if you don't want to. Liquid iron supplement with vit C would have the same benefits.

My pharmacist went OFF on general prenatals when I picked up my PregVits yesterday. The ones I get are pink & blue, pink = iron & vit C in am, blue = calcium in pm. He said too many women take an all in one prenatal and the calcium binds with the iron in your tummy causing you seriously bad side effects (upset tummy and constipation). He said you have to take iron with orange juice or vit C and no milk or calcium. Also, some ladies in third tri are still deficient even with a good prenatal. He said then you need to take liquid iron if this happens. It's SO hard to digest iron from a pill (goes for calcium too). He said 28mg is the recommended iron dose for a pregnant lady and asked me if I knew how much this is? Apparently it's 30 heaping plates full if spinach. I feel so much better now that he explained it all to me.

Iron carries the oxygen on each blood cell. Low iron = low oxygen for baby. Oxygen deprivation causes developmental issues (primarily in learning disabilities and ADHD) and is the most common side cause for ppd.

If you're thinking about, do it! I did it and I feel like it probably made a huge difference. I only have one birth so far so can't say how I would have felt without, but everyone I've talked to who did it with one birth and not with another said the capsules made a massive difference. I have a history of serious mental illness in my family and though I've never had any problems myself, that family history means I'm at high risk of PND. I had a raw placenta smoothie a few hours after birth (wasn't gross at all, just looked and tasted like a fruit smoothie). I was amemic after birth (but not before) and I think that helped a lot to start to bring my iron levels up because placenta is really rich in iron. And then I started the capsules on about day 4 or so. I did start to feel really anxious and depressed, which is typical of the baby blues that start about day 3. But it felt like a bit more than just ordinary sadness or exhaustion. This was around day 3 or 4. By the end of that week, I felt fine again after a couple days on the placenta capsules. Who knows what would have happened without them, maybe I would have still felt fine. But I'm glad I didn't have to find out. I also had lots more energy and didn't seem to feel tired like my friends who had babies around the time I did. I definitely think the placenta capsules made that possible. Oh, and I had SPD, and that went away completely after birth. There is some relaxin in the placenta, but it's not massive amounts and I've never heard of anyone who had SPD after birth that was related to eating their placenta. SPD can last for years after birth for some people, but it's usually because they have an underlying misalignment that doesn't get fixed (btw, chiropractic or osteopathy helped my SPD a lot).

I was so happy with it that I've now trained as a placenta specialist, so I can do encapsulation and other natural remedies for other mums. And I'll do it again next time I give birth.

It's not for everyone, but realistically placenta is used in a lot of pharmaceuticals and high end cosmetics so it's quite possible you've already ingested or rubbed someone else's on your face. That to me seems kinda gross. People freak out about placenta encapsulation or other remedies, but that freaks me out a little! Actually if you dispose of your placenta at the hospital because you don't want to encapsulate it or take it home with you, likely it will be sold or 'donated' for a reciprocal 'donation' from a pharmaceutical firm, and used to make stem cell injections used to treat spinal injuries or wrinkle cream or whatever. It's one of those weird things that most people don't know. So even if you don't want to eat it and like I said, it isn't for everyone, maybe at least consider taking it home and planting it in your garden under some flowers or a tree for your baby. It seems kinda creepy that it might just get sold to some company when it's nourished your baby for 9 months.

To the OP, since you're in the US, check out: https://placentabenefits.info/

PBi is the main organization that's popularized placenta encapsulation in the U.S. You should be able to do a search and find someone near you who can do it for you.

I did it last time. I have huge placentas so I still have many left. I spiked a 105 fever shortly after taking my pills, though, and while it likely wasn't related, I couldn't shake it. I ended up not taking many more. They say not to take them if you are sick or whatever.

I still would go back and do it. Why not!?
