Placenta issue/help

Hi ladies,
I had my little boy 10 months ago and after a very long birth which ended in forceps my husband cut the cord. When the doc tried to remove the placenta the cord snapped she then manually tried to remove the placenta which was coming out in chunks, after being elbow deep and lots of blood loss I was then sent to theatre to have an epidural, it was that or be put under anaesthetic, and be scooped out and stitched up for medical reasons and as I had previously had no pain relief.
Does anyone have any idea why my placenta just fell apart and is it likely to happen in following labours?

My placenta got stuck last time too, I am told there is a slightly higher chance it could happen again. I also had to have a spinal and go to theatre to have it removed.

Did you have the injection last time? I did and I think that may be what caused my uterus to clamp down and trap it as this can be a side effect. They tried pulling on the cord and literally putting their hand up there but couldn't get at it. Maybe it was because they were pulling at yours that it came out in bits, I am not sure?

Anyway, I have decided I would like to have a natural 3rd stage this time to try and allow it to come out on it's own and hopefully prevent me from clamping down before it gets a chance!

WSS^. It's a potential side-effect of a managed third stage I think. Best letting it come in its own time without being pulled on.

When you have a very long labor post birth your uterus can get tired and "quit" doing what it needs to do (contract). That might be why??

This happened to me in my first pregnancy. Dr. said there was no reason for it to happen. This is much more common if you've had a c-section or previous scarring and the placenta attaches to the scar tissue. Mine was successfully manually removed and it was very traumatic for me. My epidural had worn off by that point so I felt EVERYTHING. Your Dr. should not have tugged on the cord hard enough to make it snap and that may be why it came out in chunks.

Because of this experience I was very worried it would happen again and opted to be induced for #2. I had my second baby boy last year and the placenta came out right away, I barely even noticed. They made sure to increase my pitocen after baby arrived to help the placenta detach. It all worked beautifully, it just came away on its own and I didn't even notice until Dr. said it was coming out.
