Placental Abruption Awareness

I actually wanted to purchase some web space and start an awareness site, as there isn't a whole lot out there when it comes down to it. I have done a lot of reading as well on this subject and a few others but I needed to study a lot of medical terms and illness due to my course in Medical Administration :) Maybe I will work on something tomorrow to make sure it is all in order and see where it goes from there. I would also like to get into some fund raising to have an ultrasound machine here in our small town as we need to travel 40 minutes for any medical procedures other than a darn check up!
I donated to the DECH hospital in Fredericton to get their 3-4D machine but we need something (even of lower technology) here as well!

Well, I think you're just the person for the job. All the best awareness campaigns/studies are done by those with a bit of understanding and a direct interest in the subject.

i had placental abruption at 38+1 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I started bleeding a bit (like a period) & everyone including the midwives said it was a show & that its nothing to worry about. It got heavier over the course of a few hours so i was having to change my pad i was wearing every half hour. I had a scan & they didnt pick anything abnormal up. By now i was in labour so they left me alone. When i was fully dialated i started bleeding really heavily & the midwife used a doppler & there was no heartbeat so she told me to push & she pulled my baby at the same time. After a couple of minutes Reese was born but wasnt breathing & had to be given oxygen. Thankfully after 10 minutes she was breathing on her own but still quite poorly as she was grunting when she breathed. The placenta had came away completely a few minutes before she was born & fell out at delivery. I carried on bleeding heavily for weeks after the birth. Reese made a full recovery but it could have been so different. I was told that it wouldnt happen again (although i now know it can).

my 2nd daughter was born without any complications.

i think this thread is a great idea as id never heard of this before it happened to me. Knowing the warning signs can save lives.

i'm sorry for your loss, :hugs: xxxxxxxxx

Thank you! :)

2 girlies- I am so glad that your daughter was alright, as outcomes can be so different from one another! My placental completely separated at 3:11pm and Kaleb wasn't born until 4:23pm so he went too long without oxygen and suffered from too much blood loss to survive on his own for any length of time. Yes, it can happen again in most cases as a lot of times, the doctor can't find a direct cause for the abruption. Very glad your second pregnancy went well too, gives me a little more hope that our daughter will be born happy and healthy :)

Fluxus- Thanks Hun! :D How have you been feeling these days? Hope all is well with you and your LO!

my wife suffered a complete abruption at 38 1/2 weeks during the pregnancy of our second son. She felt like she was having one long contraction that wouldn't go away, but no bleeding. Turns out the blood was pooling behind the placenta, which is why there were no visible signs. The only reason they caught what was happening was the attending nurse remembered reading in her school textbook about the stomach being hard when an abruption is occurring.

By the grace of god our little guy survived, but he now suffers from encepalopathy(brain damage), and has cognitive/mental difficulties due to experiencing late metabolic acidosis and severe hypoxia. I know it may not be the same coming from a man, but extra vigilence is key during your last few weeks to ensure the well-being of you and your baby. Don't count on the doctors to know much about this, or how to correctly treat/stabilize your child once he/she is born.

For us, my wife's pregnancy was perfect until those last two hours that I almost lost her and my son. Now my son will live with this disability for the rest of his life. I agonize every day about whether or not we could have made it to the hospital sooner, or done something differently, but that is something we will have to live with. Just my thoughts,

a DAD and HUSBAND

Thanks for posting this lovely. I had a complete concealed abruption at home at 36.4 weeks too. I felt ill,had sort of a woody feeling on my tummy and had the "contractions too".I had no vaginal bleeding. I wasnt aware about abruptions until this happened to me and we lost our son in march.Im glad that you posted this as it brings awareness,as rare as it is,that it does happen. :hugs:
