Hi, I hope this is in the right place but its the first time I've posted. I recently found out I'm pregnant and although its early days I am already worrying because my last pregnancy was only 11 months ago where my little boy was delivered by emergency c-section due to placenta abruption. Should I be doing anything to prevent it happening again? Has anyone had this and gone on to have a problem free pregnancy afterwards? Will I be monitored more ?

Hi,

I don't have any experience with this but I didn't want to read and run. I was under the impression that placental abruptions tend to be spontaneous. However, have you spoken with your doctor? Maybe he can send you for more frequent ultrasounds to check the health of the placenta and to make sure it is not tearing away from your uterine lining.

I had a placental abruption with my first and got pregnant a year later I had extra scans and they were specialist scans showing blood flow and for the last few weeks it was weekly when I got to 38 weeks the scan showed the the placenta was starting to calcify and so the next day I had my little lady and when they looked at the placenta it was fine they keep a better eye on you if you have had previous problem xx

Hiya,

In my first pregnancy I had an abruption at 39 weeks which sadly for me ended in my son being stillborn. My second pregnancy was induced early at 37 weeks with no placental issues and I had 1 extra scan and this pregnancy is being induced at 38 weeks with 2 extra scans (one at 28 weeks and one at 32 weeks), some extra midwife visits and also consultant check-ups. I would presume that your midwife has already referred you to a consultant, I saw mine at 19 weeks and he said that was the optimum time for a first appointment, to give time to plan care etc. You don't say at how many weeks you abrupted at but whoever is leading your care should book you in for induction of labour at least 2 weeks before that date (as long as it's viable to)

The risk of abruption does tend to be higher in subsequent pregnancies, I think it goes up by about 10% so hopefully you will be monitored closely.I will be asking for weekly scans from 34 weeks onwards.

But try not to worry, my second pregnancy was fine and even though my labour was pretty horrendous at least the placenta was functioning and my son was born healthy (he's a strapping 14 year old now :)

Thanks everyone for taking the time to get back to me and apologies for not replying (thought I'd get an email or something to notify if someone replied?!). Anyway, had consultant app today and he has recommended scans at 31 and 35 weeks, 35 weeks is when I had the abruption last time. I'll be having a c-section as I've had two emergency sectionbs already and he said they shouldn't do it before 39 weeks but that it would depend on what the scans show.......x

I had a placental abruption with my boy in September. He was delivered by an emcs and it was pretty traumatic, we both had 104 degree fevers by the end of it. Even though I'm no where near trying to conceive again I'm terrified it might not end up as well next time, I have no idea why I even had one. Good Luck!
