Hi everyone, quick message. I had an ultra sound scan and was told I have polycystic ovaries. I had bloods done for thyroids, hormones etc and was all normal. The lady at my doctors said to me 'you have polycystic ovaries nothing more nothing less that's all I got, I have been trying to conceive for nearly 3 years and she is saying she isn't worried and that she wants me to have an std test if that comes back clear then she will refer me. For 1 refer me to where? 2 she saying I do ovulate but when I had the scan the woman who did it said it means I don't ovulate. 3 what is the difference between polycystic ovaries and polycystic ovary syndrome? Please help much appreciated x

I can answer most of your questions.

1) When she says she will refer you this means she will pass you on to a specialist (often called an RE). There are only certain tests that a doctor can perform (hormones etc) so for further testing to try and discover the cause of your infertility you need to be referred to a specialist.

2) The doctor is correct - just because you have polycystic ovaries does not mean you aren't ovulating on your own. If all of your hormone tests were fine then it is very likely you are ovulating on your own.

3) Polycystic ovaries simply means you have many cysts on your ovaries. Normally each month a woman will produce an egg which matures and is released (ovulation). In the case of polycystic ovaries, multiple eggs grow but only the most mature one ripens and is released. The others turn into cysts on the ovaries.

Polycystic ovaries is one sign of PCOS but on its own it does not mean you have PCOS. To have PCOS you need 2 of 3 signs, polycystic ovaries, hormone imbalance, excessive hair etc. Therefore people can be diagnosed with PCOS without actually having polycystic ovaries.

I have PCO but not PCOS. However if you are going down the route of IVF and you have PCO then you are much more likely to over-respond to the medication and develop OHSS.

Thank you for your reply. I have been looking everywhere for answers and wasn't really understanding what I was coming across. Is there anything I can do naturally with out any help to conceive? Does this mean its easier for people to get pregnant with pco then it is for people with pcos? Also what is ohss?

There isn't anything specific you should do if you have PCO, just follow the normal guidelines for getting pregnant.

It is not easier for people with PCO to get pregnant compared to normal, but a lot of people with PCOS have problems ovulating on their own so I suppose in this regard you could say it is easier for people with PCO to get pregnant since they do ovulate, but it really depends on the cause of their infertility. They don't release more eggs, most of the ones that grow are simply immature and then form cysts. Several people with infertility issues have PCO.

OHSS is ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome - with PCO you body can easily over respond to the drugs which means you produce lots of eggs. This can cause OHSS which in its most serious form can put you in hospital as it has led to some deaths (fortunately this is very rare).

I have extremely irregular periods. I mean I've had 4 in the last 2 years. It's very hard for me to conceive. Currently I'm trying. Supposedly my test results came back positive that I was ovulating, although I never get my period. It took my 1 and a half years to get pregnant with my first. Now I have been having unprotected sex with my husband for 2 and a half years and we do not have a second child to show for it just yet, but I know it will happen eventually.
