Our second son arrived this Saturday at 6am, 4 days after his due date and after a week of early labor and weeks of irregular contractions. I was hoping all those practice contractions would set us up for a quick delivery and it seems as though it did below is Theodore's birth story, a little long but I didn't want to forget anything.
Friday 12/19- dh stayed home from work as my contractions were between 8-9 min apart and stronger then they had been all week. At one point in the morning they were down to 6 min apart but as the day went on they became more irregular and varied in strength. Decided to take my mind off of them by grocery shopping and last minute Xmas shopping while dh watched our ds.
12/19 9pm- contractions began picking up in intensity. Started timing them and using coping techniques such as meditations, hypnobirthing and a shower to get myself ready just in case
12/20 1am- had 2 contractions that brought me to tears, about 4-5min apart and I knew this was the real deal. I began finishing up packing my bag, woke Dh up so he could get ready and warm the truck up for our 2 min drive to the hospital
2am- arrived in hospital and hooked up to monitor To see contraction pattern
2:30am- nurse couldn't get ahold of my dr but they decided based on my contractions 4 min apart and dialation 4cm/completely effaced I'd be admitted!
3am- decided to try laboring in whirl pool tub. I was hesitant because the tub didn't help my last labor, but i was able to really relax and cope with these contractions better in the tub than I imagined. Stayed in tub until I started feeling too hot, and also got more pressure pushing feelings- I didn't think it was time to push yet but I felt like I needed to get out of the tub asap
4:30am- labored on all fours on the bed resting my arms on birth ball while we waited for nurse to come in to check progress. I knew I was close because I started throwing up and shaking but didn't realize how close!
5am- checked and was 9 1/2 cm! Only a lip of cervix so they called dr in to check since I was feeling the urge to push with every contraction. At this point dh said I asked for an epidural but the doula told me "you don't want that", but it was at this point that I questioned if I could do this. I had dh grab my grandmas handkerchief I brought to remind me of her strength when I felt weak. Also decided to turn on my meditations playlist which goes through a peaceful birth, and the meditation seemed right in tune to the timing of my contractions/ how I was feeling. I really had to focus through getting through each contraction because The pressure was so intense and I wanted to push so bad. I did a combo of breathing/affirmations to help me get through this part. I even chanted "I think I can I think I can" and "my body is made to do this", and by chanted I am pretty sure I screamed this. But most of the time I was low tone moaning and visualized my cervix opening.
5:50am- checked and complete! Best news ever! My body was ready to push but my mind wasn't. It took me about 5 or so minutes to get into the groove of pushing- I hadn't felt this with my first since I had an epidural- and the pain while pushing was so intense, albeit a slight relief. I felt the ring of fire and remember screaming "I feel everything" and everyone was screaming you're doing great he's coming keep pushing! The dr told me to feel his head so I did, then dug down and with a few big pushes little man was born at 6:05am. Literally felt like the biggest poop of my life and I actually roared at the end. The pain immediately went away though after he came out and as I held our littlest man and his cord continued to pulse. He pooped on me just like his brother too! He didn't cry right away but was just looking at me taking everything in. The nurses got him to cry and were content that all was well. Then Dh cut the cord and we continued with our golden hour (ended up being 2 hours as so many women were giving birth). They weighed him 7lbs 9oz 21 inches and he passed apgar with flying colors. Amazing and empowering experience to be able to birth without fear naturally, but I'm not running out the door to do it again as we are probably done having children. It was a beautifully intense experience that every woman should experience at least once if possible! My recovery is much smoother this time around, I was up immediately after and cleaned up, and feel loads better than I remember with my first, although the after cramps are still not fun. All worth it though! I hope my positive experience helps some of you mamas looking for a natural birth!
