This was my first pregnancy, and I was 40w4d when babe was delivered.

My labour started at 2:30am on January 16th. That evening I was having a really hard time sleeping and I kept waking up to go to the bathroom. After my 2:30 washroom break the pains started!!!

I lasted 2 whole contractions before waking my hubby up, contractions were 6 min apart. With his support we made it though to 4am before I got in the shower and by hubby called the midwife. Being that this was my first pregnancy my midwife wasn't in a big hurry to come over and check me, so we continued labouring at home. By this time my contractions were 2 min apart.

Around 5:15/5:30am the intensity of the contractions increased. I was having crazy back labour. We had planned to have a non-medicated birth centre birth, but the pain was so intense I did tell my husband once the midwife arrived we were going to head to the hospital so I could have an epidural.

By the time the midwife arrived at 6am I was having this extreme urge to use the bathroom after every contraction. She checked me and announced I was fully dilated and my body was ready to push. We live 45 min from the hospital and birth centre so we had to make the decision to transfer or deliver at home. There was no way I was getting in the car for a 45 min drive, so we decided to fill the tub and have a water birth.

Once I got in the tub all the pain disappeared. It was amazing!!!! In-between contractions I could talk normally, and the midwife and my husband were joking around. During the contractions there was no pain, just pressure. I really didn't like the sensation of pushing. There wasn't any pain, but I could feel the baby's head move down with every contraction and the sensation was odd. To be honest, I really wimped out when it came to pushing....I didn't give it 100%. Had I given it 100% I could of had him out in a matter of a handful of contractions. In the end I pushed for 50 min (which was about 10 contractions). The "ring of fire" really wan't too painful either. The baby did have his cord wrapped around his neck (nuchal cord) which resulted in a ruptured blood vessel in the eye. The midwife just unwrapped the cord and continued on like nothing happened:)

Benjamin James was born at 7:04am (4.5 hours after first contraction) weighing in at 8lbs 3 oz (3713g) and 20 inches. He was placed right onto my chest after birth and it was amazing and magical! My hubby cut the cord after it finished pulsing. I needed 2 stitches, and had a fair amount of bleeding, but the midwife easily dealt with that.

Overall, when I think about my unplanned home birth I feel a sense of accomplishment and victory. If I do have another baby I will definitely plan for a home water birth.

WATER = NATURAL EPIDURAL

That totally sounds like my dream birth! Congratulations on your baby boy!
