Possible lactose intolerance? Can you tell me if this sounds like it could be.

Okay my lo is 17 weeks tomorrow and we have terrible issues with trying to feed her... she's on c & g comfort formula, very windy both ends (not as bad now I've introduced colief, bottom end) tummy gurgling, hungry takes an oz then pulls away and cries, hiccups, green nappies that stink of rotten eggs and always loose (c&g assure me this is normal), difficult to settle and never sleeps for very long this could be down to her lack of milk. I've introduced solids the last couple of days as her daily intake of milk is only around 20 - 24 oz and each oz is a battle to get into her.

Thanks Gill xx

Not sure how to add on, that she is almost always sick (a little not whole bottle) after most feeds and grizzly whilst awake.

Hi Gill

As I mentioned in your other thread it could be lactose intolerance or possibly an allergy problem with the cows milk protein (casein I believe its called); my youngest was on C&G comfort and although his poo was sometimes greenish and runny; it didn't smell really unpleasant (usually smelt like sour yoghurt) and was never watery or mucusy; if your baby has these characteristics to their poo it may be a cause for concern. Does your LO have eczema; a congested chest or any other problems along with the problems with the milk? As these things could point to the likelihood of it being an allergy.

My LO is lactose intolerant and he was the same. He was very unsettled (was also on comfort milk) terrible stinky green nappies, very very sicky, would only take max of 20 oz per day, windy, dry sore skin on his face (cheeks and chin) and flaky ears, he was also very congestedand his chest sounded really sticky when he breathed iykwim.

He is now on SMA lactose free (with infant gaviscon for reflux) and he is a different baby. Very content, perfect skin, not so bad poo's, gets wind up no problem and sleeps 12 hours at night, wakes once sometimes for a few oz then straight back down. He now takes 6 oz at a time and is almost ready to go up to 7oz, never sick anymore and is no longer congested.

I took my LO to the docs, they prescribed sma lf. I can't praise it enough.

Hope this helps x

Just to add, I have read through your other threads and tbh I really think that's what's wrong with your LO. Sounds identical to the problems I was having. The gaviscon was making no difference before either to my little man as the milk was the problem x

Just wanted to add :) My little boy was lactose intolerant, although he wasn't diagnosed until he was about 9 or 10 months old.

He was in hospital a few times dehydrated & very poorly because of it but no Dr's wanted to test for it at all, we kept being told it was a virus.

Eventually with the help of his carers at nursery we kept a log of what he was eating/drinking at what times & his reaction and we noticed a pattern straight away.

He also suffers from excema.

Id def start keeping a diary of what she is taking & how she is reacting and take that in to your Dr. We had such a job getting our Dr to test for lactose intolerance that eventually after about 3 months of weekly visits I sat & said 'I'm not moving til you do the test' and lo and behold - he was lactose intolerant!!

Stick to your guns and push if they don't give you any solutions or tests, take your food diary with you for backup & make sure you get what you want from them. That's what Ive learnt through the experience!!

Fortunately now he has seemed to grow out of his - he still has a bit of a sensitive tummy but on the whole he's grown out of it.

Good luck hope you get some answers its horrible seeing them poorly all of the time :(:(

Hi again summer rain thank you for replying, as you can see I'm desperate to get to the bottom of this, it's doing my head in, it's all I ever think about and TBH I can feel myself getting so down over her issues with feeding I dread it everytime as I know what she's going to be like.... she ends up in tears and so do I. Poo can be very watery however it has thickened up with the baby rice over the last day or so, still smells rancid though! Yes I would say she sounds congested and when she's sick it's very mucousy, no eczema (dry skin on her cheeks and slight crustiness behind her ears) however her brother does. He was a mirror image of her we just thought 13 years ago he was a difficult baby which sent me into PND big time and I really want to avoid this happening again by nipping in the bud now. Doc keeps throwing meds at me to which she's not responding too, gaviscon and rantidine makes her cry more, could be she has severe reflux and requires a PPI she was refluxing badly yest, the milk was shooting out her nose at one point however the biggest issue is around feeding and her being so windy she can barely feed. She was very mucousy when first born and also had a bad dose of oral thrush which I think she may have back again even though we have treated it a couple of times now. Grr!

NG thank you so much for your reply I think TBH in my heart of hearts this is her problem, your right she seems to have so many of the above I'd be surprised if she didn't come back as being positive for LI.. did your doc do a stool sample test. I've asked in the past about this to be told no such thing, I've the doc on Wed and I'm not leaving until they agree this time.! xx

Thank you Linzi sorry you had to battle on for such a long time with your wee man :-( it's heartbreaking when you know something just isn't right and TBH I think the GP's don't have a clue. I've been there so many times now to be told it's reflux here's some meds off you go. I'm so fed up I've taken her to herbalists, chiropractors even had her admitted to hospital only to be told reflux and possible colic she'll grow out of it. I've kept a diary of every single feed since the day she was born and it makes me so sad to see unsettled over and over again, it's very rare I log settled. Which milk did you have your little one on? Are you in UK when your doc agreed to a lactose test? The other test I would like done is to test to see if she has any candida in her poo, as I've read on another forum of a wee one who had a very similair problems to Isla turns out he/she had excessively high levels in her gut, was given meds and low and behold the baby is fine now.!

We just used gow & gate lacto free milk (sorry cant remember what it was actually called now) our doctor never offered us a prescription!!

Yes we are in the UK, its a poo test, we had to try & get a bit out of his nappy into a sample bottle.

If you have any other questions tho please feel free to PM me :) xx

No, they didn't test, they weren't interested at all tbh, I was at the docs numerous times and they kept fobbing me off so I researched it myself, made an appointment and said I think my LO is lactose intolerant becasue of (all the reasons listed before) and I want something for it this time, he has been sick since he was born and enough is enough. Low and behold they did a prescription and he is now 'fixed'. Just tell them you're not having it, stick to your guns and make them do something. My HV told me not to be so silly and to persevere, he would grow out of it by the time he was 1, wtf??? I decided not to take her advice!! lol x

My LO is lactose intolerant and that sounds very similar to how he was xx

ETA: It's a reducing substances stool test that needs doing. They wouldn't test my LO until I demanded they did xx

Well I went to the GP and more or less got laughed at over the stool sample! :growlmad: He told me it was reflux, she would grow out of it and it was up to me to get the Losec mups into her! I ended up buying the Sma LF and to be honest it made her horrendously constipated & she cried after every bottle, so it doesn't look she is lactose intolerant popped her back on the comfort milk and within a few hours she was back to diahorrea & a bit happier in herself however she's still extremely windy and taking an hour to take 4oz! I've started the losec over the 10 days and haven't seen much of an improvement. Geez o this is so difficult I just know she's not 100% TBH I'm just thinking of trying her back on first milk and riding with it but it's so difficult when she doesn't want to feed :dohh: xx
