Possible miscarriage

Hi ladies. I'm wondering if I am experiencing a possible miscarriage. I was supposed to start my period on Dec 18 and I started spotting. I spotted for 3 days then on the 21st I started my period. It was lighter than normal for me (mine are typically heavy for 3-4 days then light for 2-3 days). I'm still bleeding over 2 weeks later. Then this past Monday (at the 2 week of bleeding mark) it got much heavier and yesterday and today I'm noticing more/large clots. As well as cramping and back pain (again...normal for my period) but these are a little stronger than normal. I haven't had a yearly check in 4 years (awful, I know) but I do believe I have a hormone imbalance (based on several factors and lots of research). I have a doctors appointment on Friday (with ultrasound just in case...we weren't sure if it could be cysts or something else causing this). Could this be a miscarriage? Should I see if I can get into the doctor sooner? Thank you.
