Possible preeclampsia?

I'm 30 weeks tomorrow and I had an ob appointment today. They took my blood pressure as normal which was slightly elevated at 124/92. They also tested my urine and they found protein in it. I've never had either problem before so she ordered blood drawn and I have to pee in a jug for the next 24 hours and bring that in to be tested tomorrow. She said she wasn't too concerned just yet otherwise she would have sent me to the hospital to be monitored for 24 hours. She said we would discuss it more after she gets all of my results back.

So here are my questions. At what point is it considered preeclampsia and what do they usually do for it? I know I'm not that bad yet, but I'm really worried about my little girl. She's far too little too be delivered just yet. Is there medication, do they put you on bed rest, is there anything I can do to improve the blood pressure or protein in urine? What agree the chances this is just a one off and there isn't actually anything wrong? Thanks ladies.

Hi, I'm going through the same thing...I'm. 32+6. They found protein in urine and bp has been along the lines of 143/85 and 150/90. I also have the classic foot swelling, severe edema in my tummy, facial swelling. What you have is considered mild preeclampsia and it becomes full on eclampsia when you have the headaches and blurred vision

I just went on complete bedrest. We are trying to hold on to wk 34. When and if you have headaches that don't stop with Tylenol, see black and white spots, they will deliver you...

In the meantime, because I was already high risk ID twins, we are doing weekly biophysical profiles at my MFM office--in Addition to nst, growth scan, this scan looks at babies moving for about 15-20 min and for signs of things eclampsia causes like placenta abruption. Ask your OB to follow you closely with this type of scan weekly, huge hugs <3

Thanks Lucy. Just dropped off my 24 hour sample so we'll see what the doctor says on Monday. I'm sorry to hear you're on bed rest, but it's so worth it to keep those babies baking longer.

Hi Panda, I had pre-e with my first pregnancy starting at 27+2, for me it was very fast to progress going from trace protein to +4 and my liver starting to fail within 5 days and having to deliver DD at 28+0, but it's very rare for this to happen. If you don't have high blood pressure issues prior to pregnancy then its likely to be slow to progress, they'll usually monitor your blood pressure and test your urine at least once a week from now on. They'll also do a growth scan every 2-4 weeks, depending on how things look on that depends on how they treat you.

It is likely you'll be put on an anti-hypertensive, labetalol is the most common first line of defense, however as you won't be on it for very long (12 weeks max) they may decide on Methyldopa. Both can have side effects, most commonly mild headaches or fatigue which tends to wear off after about a week once your body is used to them. Bed rest is prescribed if and when they feel they need a bit of a hail mary pass to buy them some time until the meds kick in, or to buy you a few more days or weeks to deliver. Medication is used before they go for bed rest, as it very literally means lying down which is hard to do all day every day, your bp rises simply by sitting up, or crossing your legs. For bed rest to be most effective you should be flat and laid on your left side.

Incidentally pre-e becomes full eclampsia only if and when you being seizing. It is very, very rare for it to progress to this stage. Most often pre-e will increase in severity over a few weeks, leading to black spots in your vision (floaters), headaches, nausea or sickness. If you feel unwell, go to the hospital, get checked out. If your bp has risen they can up your meds and get control again, but if they leave it too long it goes past the point of no return where they can't get ahead of it again. In rare cases (as with me, about 5-10% of women) pre-e doesn't affect the kidneys the hardest, but the liver. In this instance you'll get severe pain on the right side under your rib cage (put your open hand below the bottom of your bra around your ribs fingers touching the centre of your body, about where the lower two fingers are), it's like your liver sending out an sos. If you feel this kind of pain (and you cant miss it, its not a bit of a twinge, its constant and hurts like hell) go to the hospital immediately. It's rare as I say but worth mentioning as its a major warning sign your body isn't responding to treatment.

I had bp over 160/120 for 6 weeks, headaches, hallucinations, sickness, but it still took a long time before they decided to deliver, so if you do get a headache do not panic that this means they definitely are going to deliver! They want that LO to keep cooking as long as possible. However if they do need to deliver anything past 30 weeks is considered a feeder and grower, yes they'll be small, and its very scary for you, but not for the doctors and nurses, who will expect your baby to just spend a few weeks learning to eat and put on a few lbs, then go home with you to a completely normal life x

I had pre-eclampsia in my pregnancy -- it developed quite suddenly (at about 34weeks) although I suffered from headaches throughout (I get headaches normally as well). It was my previous normal HBP that indicated a problem. My GP saw me and then checked LO was okay (he was). When I saw my ob-gyn (I went private), she admitted for 48 hours observation, doing the urine collection and it was stable. I then came in every other day to the blood pressure clinic and one day, I had a terrible headache that didn't shift, I was very swollen (my eye-lashes and tongue hurt) and I begged to be admitted. My ob-gyn, who was hoping to get me to 37weeks, agreed and when I said I was worried about the weekend, said 'don't worry, you're having the baby today!' -- I did have an emergency c-section (we were planning a c-section anyway as LO was guestimated to be about 8-9lbs) at 36 1/2 weeks and LO was fine (he weighed 6 lbs 11 oz), but I was rushed to high dependency and put on magnesium sulfate. I think was a few hours from eclampsia, but because I was so carefully monitored, it was okay.

Incidentially, LO was always fine (he did go to NICU for 13 days, but part of it was that I was so poorly, and he was not eating as much as he could/should, but that was partly the newborn teat, when we changed to the next size up, he gobbled it up and was home the next day) and he will be 2 tomorrow! (so of course, I am thinking about those last few days as it was 2 years ago exactly!), but pre-eclampsia is extremely well managed these days and it is very rare for any major complications. Just keep your medical team aware of any and all symptoms (for instance, I never got the black spots) and know that quite a few ladies here like myself have had it and been okay during and aftrwards! (It was actually another BnBer who had me double check my at home BP and my GP saw me immediately)

hugs and best wishes!

Pamela

Thank you Dinah and Sabrina. That's a lot of great info. I've had a few headaches recently that just didn't feel quite normal and Tylenol didn't help, but they went away on their own. I get black spots and flashes of light on my vision normally, but I don't think I've seen any difference in what I normally see. Not any symptoms other than that I guess. Got a call from my doctor yesterday evening that she wants to go over my test results, but I didn't get the message until late. Didn't think I'd hear from her until Monday so it's not looking great. Calling her back right after this so we'll see how she wants to proceed. All your stories make me feel a little better and not quite so worried.

We'll its been a bit of a whirlwind day. Doctor called me back and said my protein was severely elevated and she said i needed to go to the hospital right then for monitoring. Except she didn't send me to the hospital I'm supposed to deliver at, she sent me to one that has a better nicu because baby is coming sooner rather than later. By the time I get there my blood pressure was 205/97. They said i have severe preeclampsia and they were worried about me seizing. They even prepped a room for her in the nicu because they thought they were having to get her out right away. Well I responded to meds and pressure dropped so now I'm on bed rest and stuck in the hospital until I have her. They gave me a steroid shot to mature her lungs and now it's just wait and see.

I also was admitted until I deliver yesterday morning due to massive headache and 513 protein in ruins where norm is 300...I was contracting every minute and took steroid shot yesterday...hope you can also get them both in time <3. My bp is still 150/94, but they were concerned enough to admit. Sending you huge hugs, that definitely sounds like full on eclampsia. Just want you to know you're not alone , I know bedrest isn't fun, but good for our babies...:flower:

Just checking in on you both, hoping for some good news x

Hi ladies. Well we held off as long as we could, but my blood pressure just wouldn't stay down and I started having other issues. My little Emerson Rose is here now born at 30+3 on February 4th by c section. She also has iugr so she is small for her gestational age. She only weighed 2lbs 8oz at birth. She's got a long way to go, but she is doing very well in the nicu. We're just taking things one day at a time and just trying to stay as positive as possible.

Congratulations on the birth of Emerson! She may be here a lot sooner than expected, but thats just an extra 10 weeks with her you'd never otherwise have gotten. How are you holding up? Just a heads up, the nicu nurses talk about the 3 day blues. On day 3/4 your hormones go a bit mad, and the tiniest bump seems like the end of the world. I remember sobbing for 3 days because the vent setting went up by 1%, because she needed to go under the lamps for jaundice (over 80% of preemies need this), because her temperature sensor was leaving a mark on her skin, because I couldn't hold her and I felt I'd failed her. It's a really normal feeling to find this time hard, the best thing that helped me was one of the doctors looking me in the eye and telling me I was the mom, my job was to worry, but he wasn't worried one bit, and until I saw him worry I needed to tell myself I was doing completely normal mom worrying, that didn't have any basis on how DD was actually doing. The thing that helped me was pumping milk for her, no one else could give her that and suddenly I had a role in her life.

first off, congrats on the cute baby, panda!
well i am in the same boat. at first i was diagnosed with "gestational hypertension", but after my 24 hour urine test come back "elevated", my dr has now ordered a weekly stress test for baby. my only symptom (not sure if it has anything to do with pre-ecla) was abdominal discomfort, which i rang the dr for. when i saw her, she took my blood pressure 4 times which ranged from 150/90 to 140/70. i had a stress test, and baby was perfect. now i am starting the weekly visits. wondering if all this goes back to normal after baby is born???????????

Thank you autumn, she is a little cutie isn't she? I'm sorry you're going through this. Preeclampsia is awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Are you on any blood pressure meds? Your numbers seem kind of high to just leave it. Is there any aSh you can monitor your pressure more often than once a week? It can get bad very rapidly. Mine was only slightly elevated on Friday at 124/92 and on Sunday it was 205/96. I hope it stays down for you. To answer your question, yes everything can go back to normal after baby is born, but it might not. It's very normal for it to take 4-6 weeks for bp to return to normal. I'm still waiting for mine to go back down. I'm getting almost normal readings right now (136/84 last time I checked) but I'm on bp meds so it would definitely be higher without. It's just wait and see at this point.

Emerson is beautiful! Praying for a quick recovery for her and that you'll be able to take her home soon.

Make sure to look after yourself too. We were fortunate that my little girl wasn't prem but I did suffer frompost traumatic stress disorder after the birth (not only being close to death but I was unconscious for her birth as too ill for spinal, so remember little of her first 24 hours and felt a lot of loss and guilt). I didn't seek help straight away and as a result it was about a year before I coped very well with certain triggers, with hindsight I should've talked to my doctor.
