OMG this is just insanity, if someone had tried this when I was a baby they would have been sectioned!!! I mean for a start holding a baby over a sink to pee and poo - surely that isn't right, we don't pee and poo in sinks!! I am just amazed that anyone would try this! Its one thing to start when your baby is a bit older and actually comprehends what you are saying but a newborn?

i find it rather interseting i would do it if i didnt have a toddler to potty train as well i guess it would make it easier at gabrielles age its know as ec or elimination comunication i considerered it with gabrielle as well not sure it would use a sink tho

Im pretty sure someone on here potty trained their newborn cos I remember there was a big contraversial thread on it!

Personally, I dont think its a particularly good or hygenic idea but hey ho, each to their own.

i remember reading about this in 'what not to expect' i think!!! Apparently very common in developing countries where baby goes to work with mother so mother is with them all of the time and can see the different expressions on babies face to know what is about to happen!........... it went on to say that it is very hard to do in this day and age due to lots of other busy western mum commitments!

Haven't read the link but my aunty used to hold her son over a potty from newborn evertime zhe fed him until he went. He didn't actually end up potty trained till he was 4. Lol

seems insane to me.
I can imagine doing it

All i can say is WHY? honestly!!!

Its not potty training, its EC. You learn your babies cue to when they need to poo and pee and go with the flow, they will still need to be potty trained later, they will be nappy free but they dont have the control to hold their poo and pee and dont know when they are going, so the parent has to know every little cue and be there to do what needs done.

I find it very interesting but tbh I dont see the point.

I find the idea very interesting but again don't see the point. I saw a programme about it where a lady did EC with all her kids and said that they were EC 'graduates' at around 2 and a half to 3 years of age - which is around the same age for normal potty training

I find it a bit weird. I used to be friends with a girl, I went to her house once and she had her 4 month old baby hanging over a potty pooing  She was shouting at her OH because she was pooing on the floor as she was running with her to the potty with no nappy on ... needless to say she soon gave up but I thought it was absolutely mental ... the poor child doesn't know whats going on!

Thats just it what on earth is the point of it other than saving yourself money on nappies I just don't get it!!!

I think for a lot of people it's the idea that if your baby is communicating a need, then it's good to respond to it. The cues disappear if you don't pick up on them early.

nah not for me.. I'll be potty training when he can verbally communicate whats going on. lol

Wonder if its worth it for the nappies you save=stress you have! lol

I don't think it's potty training, I think they pick up on their baby's cues when they're about to pee or poo. It's normal in a few areas around the world. I could understand that people do it to prevent diaper rash, or to save on money, but it's NOT FOR ME! LOL......

Too much effort IMO. :haha: I mean really who watches their baby THAT much to know to run to a toilet in time. That is just way too stressful. You'd have to watch them like a hawk and drop anything you are doing. Cloth diapers save me enough money so money wouldn't even be a factor for me. :smug::D

May be some people do it because of the millions of £s spent on 'disposing' of disposable nappies that don't actually breakdown for c.500 years...

....may be it's because it's unnatural for a baby of any species to defecate itself and sit in it...

...may be it's because babies love having their nappies off???!

...it's not just about the money!

Troll?

I don't see why it's so weird. I was potty trained from birth, and was quite happily on a potty by the time I was short of one. No weird toilet issues, either. My parents say they found it easy to pick up my prompts and went with it.

I haven't done this with dd, as we didn't feel confident enough, but I'd certainly consider it for the future.

Apparently there is little mess and stress if you become attuned to the prompts.

Its just a different way of doing things...and seems ok to me!

LOL - yes they would .... but my grandmother's generation (I'm older than you so we're talking 1930's) did it as a standard  Baby was held over the potty until they 'went' after every feed.

It kind of made sense then - cloth nappies and no automatic washing machines so nappies (and all washing) had to be scrubbed by hand and then boiled on the stove or in a big copper over a fire. they only did one wash a week because it was such a production and took the whole day, so it made sense to try and cut down as much as possible on heavily soiled nappies

They had no wraps or plastic pants either, so LO soon became soggy or worse with a nappy on :dohh: - the same goes for babies in the developing world today.

It's not potty training though - just good timing :haha:

Seems like a giant waste of time to me. Its not training the baby anyway, just training the parents.
