I thought I would finally write my birth story as BnB has been such a help to me.
My story began on my 34 week appointment - Monday 29th July. I was looking forward to my last week in work and having 5 weeks off until my due date to relax and sleep!
At my appointment my Midwife noticed that I had trace protein and higher than usual (for me not about guidelines) blood pressure. She decided that she would like me to be rechecked on Wednesday 31st.
Wednesday came and I left work for my appointment. My blood pressure was still high for me but my protein was ++. The midwife I saw decided to ring the hospital to see what they would like me to do. The day unit decided that it would be best for me to come in. At the day unit I was checked again, my protein was not ++ to +++. The hospital decided to admit me. I was terrified! I had never spent any time in hospital, I had noting packed, nothing ready for baby! My blood pressure was checked every 4 hours and I was on a ward with 4 other ladies so I didn't get much sleep.
Thursday morning they sent me down for a growth scan to decide if baby could stay in me and for me to be monitored or whether it would be safer for him to be born. The doctor came to see me in the afternoon and said that baby's growth was dropping off so they decided to induce me - I was 34+4. Thank god hubby was there!
They inserted the first pill at 2pm ish and gave me steroid injections to help his lungs. A few hours later I was having period pains. They sent me down to the Labour ward to an observation room, where I was strapped to a fetal heart monitor and had all my observations Done
By 10pm I was hurting but my cervix was still closed - queue tears! They sent me for a bath which did bugger all! By 11pm I was back in the observation room, where I was left for over an hour.
Eventually a Midwife came and checked me, by now I was hurting so I was given paracetamol and codine. By this point I has noticed baby's heartbeat kept dropping. A while later the doctor came to see me and it was decided to start me on the pitocin drip and break my waters - I was barely 1cm. Before I went down they gave me and hubby tea and toast as we hadn't eaten.
3am I was started in the drip after 2 failed attempts to get my cannula in. The doctor then broke my waters. I was strapped back up to the fetal monitor. My contractions came thick an fast, so I had gas and air, but the monitor wasn't picking them up and they kept loosing his heartbeat so I had to lie on my right hand side.
After a while I was hurting more so I asked for diamorphine. I then started having the urge to push but the midwife said not to as I wasn't ready, the last time I was checked I was barely 4cm. I couldn't stop my body pushing so I asked for the epidural. 20mins later the anesthetist came in and explained it all to me, I was contracting hard and fast.
Somewhere in between they had put a trace on babies head as they were still loosing his heartbeat. As they sat me up to start the epidural the trace popped off and as the Midwife went to put it back on she said I was 9cm with a lip left so too late for the epi - which is good as I didn't really want one!
I had gone from 4cm to 9cm in 40minutes. 20minutes later Harry Michael was born at 5.56am weighing 4lb 6oz at 34+5 on Friday 2nd August. There were midwives waiting for him. He had the cord round his neck and a knot in it too.
He didn't cry much and when they handed him to me he sstarted to turn blue so they took him back and took him to the neonatal unit.
I didn't get my skin to skin or my delayed cord clamping but my little man was here!
At 9am hubby had to go home as he was exhausted and I was allowed to have a shower. At 11am I was taken to see my baby. It was scary, he had a cannula and iv antibiotics just to be on the safe side. He also had a feeding tube and was hooked up to monitors in a hot cot.
My hospital has a transitional care unit for 4mums and babies so it meant I could stay with him and care for him with support. On day 4, Harry developed jaundice so had to have phototheraphy but he came through fine.
In all we spent 12 days on the ward before we were discharged. My Hubby told me later on I was 30minutes away from an emergency c section because his heartbeat was dropping so low and not recovering fast enough.
He is now 4 weeks old and the love of my life. He is exclusively breast feeding and he has taken too it from the start! It is hard and the sleepless nights are difficult but his cuddles make it all worth it.
