Hi, I really need some advise please...

At my first appointment the midwife asked me if I'm taking folic acid. I told her I am taking pregnacare that has folic acid in it.

She kind of frowned and very nicely said that they don't tend to recommend pregnancare as a vitamin suppliment and I should be fine taking a simple folic acid suppliment up until 12 weeks and I can then take my pregnacare from then if I want to. She added that she wasn't sure if pregnancare had the recommended dose of folic acid but I'm not sure if that was the whole reason she didn't recommend it.

As it happens my pregnancare does contain 400mg of folic acid, just as my single suppliment does. But pregnancare also has lots of other vitamins that would be useful as I'm not sure if my diet it that healthy.

So now I'm really confused.. do I follow the midwife's advice and just take a single folic acid suppliment, or do I continue with the pregnacare that has the FA plus many others??

(I have 3 months supply of both so I can do either)

xxx thank you xxx

hi! im 9 weeks and ive been taking pregnacare with omega3 since the start! it must be good for you and safe to use in pregnancy, thats whats its designed for! i took it all the way through my last pregnancy and so did my best friend, we bot had healthy babies and healthy pregnancys. hope this helps, good luck! xxx

My midwife advised me to take a multivitamin with folic acid, that was specifically for pregnant women. Tha'ts because if you're being sick and not able to keep down much of the nutrients, at least your baby will still be okay on the nutrients in the multivitamin. You can't overdose on folic acid, so you're welcoem to take a singular folic acid tablet too, but I think the multivitamin is a good idea.

My midwife suggested "Sanatogen Mother to Be", which can be taken right through until you finish breastfeeding.

My GP suggested I take a multivitamin, but not one with Vitamin A , as that can cause miscarriage. But Pregnacare doesn't have that, so should be fine. I was taking it for a while, but have changed to a boots brand one as it was cheaper. Still has the same stuff in it!

I think it's 400 micrograms (mcg), not 400 mg. (which is 0.4 mg). The recommendation is for 1 mg (1000 micrograms) daily 2-3 months prior to conception, until into the second trimester. Prenatal vitamins don't have enough: mine has 0.5 mg, so I bought a 1 mg extra supplement (so I take both a prenatal vitamin plus an extra folic acid pill daily). And if there is a personal/family history of spina bifida, the recommendation is 2-5 mg (2000-5000 mcg/day). Your body pees out the amount it doesn't need, no risk of "overdosing" on folic acid.

Thanks guys,

I was thinking of taking both... one in morning and one in evening, as yesterday I managed to 'lose' my tablet as soon as I took it after some well-timed ms

Thank you Junebug, I haven't got the box with me at mo so just remembered the '400' part and not the actual measurement. Also I didn't realised the recommendation was actually 1mg. In that case I would say that taking both may be the best option for me.

Thank you for your answers

Mine did too. I take this aswell. Pregnacare has 400mcg Folic Acid in it (which is the UK recommendation for pregnant women). From what Ive read, all Folic Acid (for pregnancy) products in the UK only have 400mcg in them.

i was taking it months before pregnancy (pregnacare) best one out there imo. I wouldnt take any other.

I take 1,200 mcg Folic along with a multi vit, and B12 and D

i took pregnacare and still do when i remember  because it just seems easier taking 1 pill with everything in it than trying to remember different things

I think Pregnacare does have enough Folic acid in it, three's no need to take extra folic acid. On my box it says it contains 400mcg of folic acid which is 200% of your recommended daily allowance, so twice as much as a non pregnant person needs, and the recommended amount for pregnant women (according to the NHS website).

I take a prenatal multi-vitamin that has 1 mg of folic acid, as well as an extra 2 mg of folic acid daily. I have been doing this for months while ttc and am planning to continue them both for my whole pregnancy.

Are you sure that's true about vitamin A? I have 2 different kinds of prenatal vitamins and both have vitamin A in them.

im not sure why she would say to take just folic acid like you say it has + in it..... also you only have a few days till your 12 weeks folic acid can be stopped at 12 weeks so if i was you i would just carry on you been taking it all this time wat is a couple more days and she said it was ok to carry it on after 12 weeks so just dont stop hun i wouldnt

i took folic acid tablets with my first pregnancy and i had morning sickness really bad.
this time i am taking pregnacare and i have only been sick once.
i think that its definately better for you. x x xx

My pregnacare box says something about the vit A thing, I think it is true.

'To protect your growing child, Pregnacare avoids excessive levels of iron and other nutrients.
Pregnacare does not contain vitamin A, as high levels are not advised in pregnancy.'
