Hi all,

I'm 19 weeks pregnant and we have my partners family pet Cockatiel staying with us whist his parents are on holiday. A friend has just mentioned to me that she thought birds were dangerous for pregnant ladies, is this true???

I haven't fed him or cleaned his cage or anything, my partner has been doing all that. Fred is about 30 years old and never leaves his cage so I don't have to handle him at all.

Am I ok to be around him or do I need to find him a new home for the next few weeks????

Thank you
xxxxxx

No worries, it's just like cats, as long as you don't make contact with the feces, you're good :)

You are fine. As long as don't clean or feed him. It is the same as having a cat. Can't clean the litter box, but safe otherwise. Don't worry. I too have a pet Conure and right now my husband is having to take care of those duties.

We have an aviary full of birds! I don't clean them out now I'm pregnant and I'm avoiding going in at all at the moment because we have a couple of hen budgies nesting and raising chicks - there's apparently a risk of salmonella before they get their feathers. One male Cockatiel will be fine - especially if someone else is cleaning him out! x

it's not true.i have birds and no problem...only cat's feces is a problem in early preg.put birds no
