I started doing some pregnancy Yoga on Tuesday and since then my stomach muscles have been really aching...I know we're not supposed to do any ab workouts whilst pregnant so I've been really confused as to why I feel like I've done 100 sit ups? Obviously I know yoga is a workout etc but I didn't think i did any poses that worked my abs and now I'm really worried to continue in case I hurt the baby "/ if anyone has any advice I'd be really grateful! xx

I've been doing pre-natal yoga too since about 20 weeks. Was it a 'live' session with an instructor or a dvd? Did you do any postures that felt like they were putting pressure on your stomach muscles at the time? It could just be that the general stretching has loosened things up a bit, especially if it was your first session. Or it could be that you are going through a growth spurt and it's just a coincidence. Either way, I wouldn't worry and don't let it put you off continuing. Just be sure that the yoga is guided by someone who is trained and experienced in pre-natal, and make sure to listen to your body - if anything feels painful or uncomfortable stop straight away. Obviously if the issue persists then it might be a good idea to mention it to your midwife/doc.

No it wasn't with an instructor but I got a sequence from a lady's pregnancy blog. I just did poses like childs pose, warrior I & II, goddess, tree etc so nothing too bad

I think it may have just been because I haven't really done any proper exercise since getting pregnant so I was a bit stiff, but my abs hurting just worried me as I know we're not supposed to work those muscles when pregnant! I'm not worried about baby right now, as she's still kicking and moving normally, but don't want to run the risk iykwim? x

If you are new to these exercises it may be 'DOMS' or Delayed Onset (of) Muscle Soreness. Basically your muscles reacting to new work required of them.

If you still have problems after a few days and you hurt (ache/sore is different, i am talking pain!) then please see a doctor who should be able to refer you to a pre natal exercise specialist. Or the midwives may know of classes you can attend live. It is imperative that your posture and working motions are observed and corrected with appropriate exercises for you. Bravo for getting into the yoga but please seek a class from a qualified (and insured!) instructor. Once they are happy you have muscle memory and can carry on with minimal supervision then go for it on your own.

Always have water and electrolytes on hand for the class and eat a small portion of protein after class to assist thd muscles recovering and laying back to their pre exercise state.

Thanks AJae, that was really helpful! Unfortunately, pre-natal yoga in my area is super expensive so I may just stick to walking/light cardio instead of yoga!

I'm doing pregnancy Pilates with an instructor, when I first started i ached a lil , but it subsided I thought I was just a bit unfit haha

I definitely recommend the Tara Lee pregnancy yoga dvds if you can't get to a class, I have both of them and have have been doing each once a week - it's pretty gentle and she's very knowledgable on what's safe or not during pregnancy, and where you might need to make adjustments. I've definitely been feeling the benefits :flower:

Like Cael I've been doing yoga & pilates all the way through - it's actually really important for labour, to prevent spd, to keep bladder control, and for quick recovery to keep strong pelvic floor muscles. My instructors simply modify for me, crunches aren't recommended but so many of the pilates moves are great for tansverse and pelvic floor stability/strength.

I've been sick and missed a week and a half so I fully expect to be sore this next week of classes. It doesn't take long for me to feel out of shape especially when I've been lazing around the house in my pyjamas:haha:

There's a working out thread for pregnant mamas on the pregnancy club boards. We've posted loads of videos for pregnancy safe yoga & pilates videos, you're more than welcome to join us.
