I had retained placenta with my first. I lost a lot of blood and was anaemic for around 6 weeks and generally quite unwell after. Had to have manual removal if placenta with no anaesthetic (was worried would affect me Breastfeeding!).

I have a consultants apt on Monday and wondered what this may entail? Will they scan placenta? Will I see baby again? Anyone know how this is managed?

Thanks in advance

I had placenta accreta with my son. It is where the placenta attached too much in one spot. I had an awful dr and was sent home despite not feeling well after the birth. I continued to feel crappy, then hemorrhaged at 3 weeks postpartum. In the er, they discovered i too had retained placenta. I had to undergo surgery 3 weeks postpartum to remove it and during the surgery they discovered it was abnormally attached.

For simple retained placenta they normally don't worry and there's not a high chance of reoccurring. But I'm suspecting you had accreta which is why they're sending you to a specialist.

If you had accreta, they'll likely scan your placenta really well. Some obs say c-section is necessary for future deliveries, but mine says we can do expectant management. She'll do an ultrasound after the birth then see if there's any signs of rpoc. Then if there are any signs I'll have a d&c right away then they'll place a balloon in my uterus to prevent hemorrhaging.

Good luck Hon!

I think this is why I am a little in the dark as what hapenned to me was never fully explained. I was massively out of it after my surgery but all I know is that I had to masses of blood clots and retained placenta manually removed. No one talked to me about it afterwards at all. I'm hoping the consultant can she'd some light and tell me what hapenned and how we can hopefully avoid it hapenning again. Thanks for your help

I had exactly the same and ended up in ICU 5 days post partum. Spent 5 days in and no further follow up or explanation. Now pregnant with DS, it's all come to light what the issue was and we have an apt too with the consultant for 'reassurance' but I intend to ask several things post delivery, I am not going through that again!

Hey Kat!

Just to let you know, I had a retained placenta with my first son and had to have it manually removed. Like you, it wasn't really explained why it stuck. I was really worried when it came to my second son's birth but the placenta came away fine. Good luck, I'm sure you will have no problems this time. I saw someone mentioned placenta accreta - it's quite a rare condition and often happens if you have had a few previous caesarians where the placenta adheres to the scar tissue (very rare). The vast majority of retained placenta have nothing to do with accreta. Try not to worry xxx

Just to let you know, I had my DS on the 17th Dec. Placenta took an hour to come away (with injection) but was fully intact and no repeat of last time. A much happier experience all around. Good luck!
