After 6 weeks of exclusive breast feeding I was at my wits end and exhausted so decided to start introducing formula (it broke my heart to do it though). My DD has barely had any formula (aptimil) -only 2 oz 1 day, nothing the next and 3 oz yesterday and since then her poos have changed from complete water to moussy. Wasn't worried it's that she used to have about 4-5 soiled nappies a day now she has 1 a day if lucky. She hasn't been now for over 36 hours and I'm getting worried. Is this normal? How can such a tiny bit of formula have such an effect?

Meadows poos changed around 6 weeks old too. She went from having a poo every feed to one a day. It might be the formula or it might just be her body is maturing and naturally pooing less often. Its completely normal I reckon. as long as she is having plenty of wet nappies.

It is perfectly normal for it to change like that. My dd had top ups of 3 oz of formula day and it made her poos change quite a bit xxx

What colour were they and what colour are they now? :D

The poo diary!! In the beginning they were the usual mustard seed types, then she went a week of being green, then back to mustard at 5-6 wks. Then at 6 weeks when I gave her the tiny bit of formula she was still mustardy but thicker (was like water before) - don't know what it is like now as she still hasn't poo'd in 48 hours. She is really straining when farting etc. but then again she always has so not really any different. (corrected my user as was logged in as the wrong id!)

I was confused then....

It does sound to have had an effect. Try a different formula if you are still keen to use it. :D

I didn't give her any formula yesterday and still no sign of poop... it's really worrying me. I don't know how long to leave it before taking her to the GP?

The longest my LO went was 9 days.

Here's my theory - I'm not medically trained but I'm a mother supporter for BFing.

I think that the formula upset her delicate tummy - this caused the constipation/changing poo. Now you have stopped the formula it needs to get out of her system AND BF babies often start off pooing every feed or at least every day until they've pooed out anything the swallowed during birth. Then they are just digesting the BM , which has very little waste in it, which almost sends them to the opposite extreme. My LO then pooed once a week for a while. Then they change again as their system matures and my poo more often again.

Dont worry - I think everything sounds fine from what you have described.

Hooray.. she finally went tonight! And boy did she go.. I've never seen so much poop in my life! It was still soft (but a little thicker than usual) but there was stacks of the stuff. Still I can relax now, I was getting so worried. (Who'd ever of thought I'd spend my days talking about baby poo!)

glad she's been now, but just wanted to let you know that layla went almost 3 weeks without pooing and even now is a once or twice a week kinda girl, so i wouldnt worry. its ok for bf babies to go without pooing for a good few days at a time x

I introduced a bottle of formula at 3 months and his poos became more moose like too! but i wouldn't worry about the frequency, Freddie has been known to go a week without a poo! as long as he/she is farting well and doesn't seem uncomfortable xxx
