Hi, I'm new to this forum. My name is Karen and I am currently 21+3 weeks pregnant with my 5th child (due 30th July 2012). At 16+3 weeks I woke up in the middle of the night with a sticky feeling on my knickers. I immediately thought I had begun bleeding. However there was nothing there but clear sticky fluid. This happened again 2 nights later. For the next 3 weeks I would have a clear fluid leaking out maybe once a week and only ever when I was sleeping. Being a nurse (sometimes our own worst enemy) i did speak to a midwife and did an amnistick test myself (changes colour in the presence of amniotic fluid). I have never had a colour change at all and I've now done 3. At a scan at 19 weeks the dr's panicked saying there was little or no fluid around the baby. I have since been to the Women's and Childrens Hospital in Adelaide and have had a long detailed scan and talks with 2 of the MFM specialists. So far the organs including the brain all seem to be working correctly and maturing according to gestational age. The bladder is full which tells me that the kidneys are working and is producing urine which can replenesh the fluid. It has a strong heartbeat the whole time and moves often. I live in a remote area and deal with the flying doctor in emergencies. All my work colleagues and the local dr are on standby and fully expecting me to be flownout with a miscarriage (consequently I am now paranoid myself). I have an appointment with the neonatologists and MFM specs and another scan on 28th March and based on these results I am expecting to make a decision on
1) whether to continue with the pregnancy
2) to decide an appropriate viable date in my mind if bubs chooses to come early.
I am preparing to go and live in our home away from home (caravan lol) and my husband will come back and forth. My other kids are almost 21, almost 19, 12 and 21 months (the surprise/shock) and now this one. I guess my question is if anyone has had PROM similar to me at an early stage and how long you have gone before delivering? If early are there any problems your child/children suffer from because of this. Most of what i have been reading has unfortunately ended in people delivering a stillborn or baby way to early to survive. I am now on antibiotics but had none until 20weeks but no infection has shown up in my bloodwork at this stage. Hoping for some good news.

My sweet woman- just know that I will say a special prayer tonight for you. I would gladly share my story with you, but it does not have a good ending. I lost my twins to PROM in the 2nd trimester.
Please stay positive- remain strong and keep your focus on keeping that baby inside of you as long as you can. Are you on bedrest at all?

Hi Fallen Ambers, thanks for your reply. Most stories and info I have found have resulted in the loss of the babies in a very short time after the PROM. However they believe mine occurred 5 weeks ago yet this baby is hanging on. I have only just stopped working as a nurse 1 week ago because the doctors have made me paranoid :-( I have a scan on the 28th and if there is more fluid around the baby then I can only assume it is due to the amount of water i'm drinking and resting, then I will stay off work. I also find that the more water I drink the more often the fluid loss occurrs, but it's only in dribbles as if I have a period. Anyway I am feeling very positive and I feel I have more positive signs than negative signs regarding this pregnancy. Oh I am 40 years old and also had an amnio done last week to wipe out any genetic reason for this happening. the FSH came back perfect but still waiting for the obscure genetic results to come through.

Hi There,
my waters broke at 20 weeks when i was pregnant with my twin boys, Connor (twin 1) was born at 21 weeks due to a prolasped cord and fell asleep at 2 and a half hours old, Harry (twin 2) made it to 24 weeks and was induced due to my health declining and Harry is a happy walking babbing nearly 2 years old. I hope everything goes well for u x

If you have any questions you want to ask, im here x
