My Specialist prescribed me provera (a 14 day dose) as I have not had a period in 6 months. I have also recently been given thyroxin to correct a slightly underactive thyroid. I have also been losing weight though healthy eating and excercise as I am currently overweight and have suspected PCOS.

After taking the provera for 9 days I got my period (while still on the provera). I spoke to my specialist and she did not seem concerned, she just told me to stop taking the pills.

My period is also very heavy.

So I guess I want to ask those who have taken provera 2 questions.

1. Is it normal to have a very heavy period after taking provera?
2. Has anyone else gotten af while they were still taking the tablets?

Could my improved health be the reason for af to arrive while still taking the tablets? (perhaps my body was just ready for a period despite the provera?)

Any advice would be appreciated!

I started to take Provera at the beganing of the year.
1. I found out the longer I go without a period, When I do take provera, My periods are VERY heavy. If I take it ever two months it does subside the heavy period, to more medium symptoms.
2. I have never started while taking the pills. But I have started the next day after I was done taking the pills. I wouldn't be concerned if your specialist didn't seem to be concerned. And I usually take 5- 10 day doses...never 14...that seems long...

Thanks carelove - I thought 14 days seemed long, but she's the expert (she has a reputation of helping women get pregant where other specialists have failed).

Has anyone else had their periods while on provera?

Yes I've heard of this happening. My doctor even said it might, and if I got my period to just stop taking the Provera. I also was only on a 10 day dose, not 14. I started spotting the day after finishing, and got full AF 3 days later. I hadn't gotten a period for 123 days! So I was expecting it to be very heavy, but it wasn't. It was, however, very long, like 9 days. So everyone's body reacts to it differently, and I wouldn't be too concerned that it's heavy, your body's got a lot of cleaning out to do! :)

Hey,

Yes that happened to me a few weeks ago. I took it to stop bleeding I had for 3 weeks. The provera stopped it for a week then whilst still on provera it started again, which turned out to be AF as I didnt take a high enough dose my body was just overriding it. So its all ok, you dont need to worry you were obviously not given a high enough dose and your body took control!
