I plan to bf but I'd like to express for the dh to give the occasional bottle, I know nothing about pumps, which are best manual or electric, can someone give me the low down in pumps please I'm totally clueless. Thanks.

I tried a manual one but it was so much hassle to get even a little bit out that I bought a second hand Medela Swing Electric pump. You can buy them new but they're around £130 whereas a second hand one cost me £50. I've been successful in pumping a few times but I don't find that I have the time as my health visitor said I should pump immediately after my little boy had fed but that's impossible when he needed burping, changing, cuddling and amusing for 2 hours! The only time I've got a decent amount was when my husband gave our LO his first bottle of ready formula whilst I slept in and I woke to find my boobs not in need but very full! Good luck with it, I find pumping a bit weird but useful nonetheless! x

I originally bought a double electric pump but I found it too much of a faff to sit there with two things attached to my boobs with a motor, etc. So I bought a manual pump and never looked back. I actually got more milk out using the manual pump than I did with the electric.

I would say start out with a manual pump and see how often you're using it, if you find it too hard, etc. They're much cheaper so if you can make it work, I would try. I used my manual pump every day for a year and I didn't find it terribly difficult.

Hi,
I used a tommee tippee manual pump daily for a month or so and got a reasonable amount of milk but I did find it awkward and often got sore nipples. I recently got a medals swing electric pump and it has made my life much easier - it is definitely quicker getting the milk out and I'm getting more too. I'm going back to work in a couple of weeks and will be expressing there so I needed a pump that was easy to use and quick.

If I just needed to pump occasionally I would have stuck with the manual pump though.
